Knee pain out of the saddle

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Knee pain out of the saddle

My wife wants to ride standing, but has slight knee pain when ever she lifts out of the saddle. She's going to see a sports doc but would like opinions and experiences.I never had this problem but my guess is she would be fine once she gains more strength. She has no problem in the saddle, but feels this slight pain on both sides of the knee cap when standing. She has no problem walking are other activities and has been riding about 2000 miles a year for 2 years.Have others worked through this?

Standing is overrated. Is your wife just looking to stand in those situations where she runs out of gearing? You can stand at a very low cadence putting little stress on the knees or you can stand at a very high candence which has always appeared to me to be stressful. What's your wife trying to accomplish?

We have some short steep hills,so shes looking for some more tools to add to her climbing repertoire, plus shes tired of watching me dance up these same hills with what appears to her to be little effort.Of course it is not necessarily less effort, but i do enjoy standing while climbing
