Thats exactly the one. Black os-115 with carbon plate. I'm sure he paid more than eBay price even with his discounts. I'd still Be using my 50mm way too short stem if he didnt tell me how bad it fit me so I owe him just for improving my fit for the last 4 months.

Thanks everyone seems like consensus is give him a fair amount and thank him for his kindness. I've only been cycling since July but i was in there 3 times a week when i first started so we had a good relationship. He knows my boss and his family so he knows I live down the street and that I don't have a ton of money right now. I'm going to go in today to buy a tube and hand him 60 extra bucks. If he doesn't accept it after I put the money in his hand then ill have to consider the matter closed and ill mail him and his wife a gift card for Christmas or something.

If he doesn't accept the money, take half, buy him a nice bottle of wine and pocket the rest. My lbs is all about building and maintaining relationships. It keeps people coming back.

If this is the bike you crashed in the "Storm Drain Thread", why not just give him the stem back?

Nachoman 10-25-12 07:54 AM

I've got a computer repair guy that I'm going through the same thing with. He came out twice and spent at least 10 hours at my office. But despite two or three e-mails requesting an invoice, he won't give me one. He keeps saying he's busy and will get to it. But he never does.

I also hate owing people money. It's aggravating.

If I tried to pay someone three times over the course of several months, I'd stop trying. Who knows...maybe he really got it for free in some other exchange or as a demo and has all the consternation that Rob outlined. Spend your money on something else in the store.

I'm a stickler for paying people but you only have to go so far. If you asked TWICE, you asked one time too many. It's on him now. You did nothing wrong. Maybe that was his way of saying "you owe me nothing". I'd forget about it.
My LBS owner is always just putting his hand up when I ask him how much something is that I just got from him. Then again I've bought 5 bikes from him in the past 1.5 years and countless accessories. Just keep going there and buying stuff.
..
Guys, this works EVERYWHERE you do business. Be good to them and they will be good in return.!EVERYWHERE!!

himespau 10-25-12 08:26 AM

Sounds like you've got it figured out. If he doesn't want your $60, then I'm sure you can find something else in the store to spend $60 on.

I did this with my lbs...but the other way around...he got my fsa stem and I needed a shorter one...when I sold my bike and wanted my stem back they had lost it so we just figured that into the price of my zipp stem later on. I wouldn't read into it too much...maybe he likes you and you're a good customer...take care of him with some beer or something.

we've already established that he didn't actually crash his bike, he was just making a story up for the interwebs.

Once you have tendered payment and been denied, you still owe the money but it becomes his obligation to quote you the price. There may be a limitation to the time in which he has to do this.

That said, I found it at Amazon for $114
http://www.amazon.com/FSA-OS-115-Roa.../dp/B0006FNAOC

Since the stem was "just a tester he bought last year" I would give him a personal check, cashiers check or money order for $50-60 with FSA OS-115 Stem written in the notes area. Keep a copy for your records in case you don't get a receipt. There is a good chance he will just accept it and all will be good. If he doesn't think it's enough it kind of pressures him to give you a figure.

Come on. It's a $50 part. No need to play paralegal

The interne has it listed from forty to 120 dollars. That's a wide variation, don't want to rip him off or myself. I guess if i give him like 60 would be a safe bet. This has been bothering me for far too long.

Your $60 and your old stem is plenty, especially since the one you have now has been collecting dust. If he won't accept your money, then you should consider the stem a gift.

It sounds like a good shop, they're making sure your needs are met. Next time you need something, you should go back.

rangerdavid 10-25-12 10:28 AM

........ or you can just send it to me via my paypal and I will make sure he gets it....

For those that think, "oh he doesn't care because he'd ask." Not true. I remember everyone who owes me money.

Small business ownership. I remember everyone as well, but as you said, it can get complicated.

Generally, I'll trust people until they give me a reason not to. Thankfully, I don't get burned that often.

foresthill 10-25-12 12:42 PM

Bring him $50 worth of nice beer or something. It'll be a lot more memorable than the $.

IBOHUNT 10-25-12 01:08 PM

I hand my LBS guys fiance a gift card. She sorts it all out for me.
