Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What bike to get with $2200 of insurance money

A friend lost an interaction with a car making an improper left. After a few stitches, he's fine, but bike (steel Jamis Quest) is totaled. Including helmet and clothes, insurance he'll get was estimated at $2100-2200. He knows his size and does his own wrenching, so he's looking online. He's looking at carbon MB on BD. based on my own good experience buying litespeed from Competitive Cyclist, I recommended Wilier below. What would you do with $2200 for a complete bike?
Thanks, Bryan

Never ridden it, but I'm sure it's a fine bike. Sounds as though he still needs to replace helmet and clothing as well. I've seen the BMC Road Racer SL01 on chainlove recently with somewhat limited sizing at $1559, which would leave him enough to replace helmet and clothing as well. All this assuming the BMC is in his size.

If he's got the money, departmentofgoods.com has a Litespeed L1 with dura ace and Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels for $2750 after you use their 50% msrp coupon

I'd go vintage Raleigh pro with $5-600 in classy tubulars, and some awesome vintage jerseys.

Thanks for the replies so far. He's got a new helmet already, and has plenty of clothes, so is happy to direct the full amount to the bike. Being a litespeed M1 owner, the L1 looks like quite a deal, although I can't figure out how to get 50% off. Anyone else have any ideas? With regards to BD (and I'm not asking for this thread to devolve into BD pro-con) I suggested he look at the Ti. I don't think I'd get a carbon motobecane, but might try out the Ti (unless I hit the lottery, then I'm in West Roxbury at firefly the next day).

Dang, I got almost $8000 without a lawyer and a totaled, 2009 Cannondale CAAD9/Dura Ace. The only injuries I sustained was road rash and a badly bruised left elbow and week of lost work.

I've been hit by cars enough to KNOW(3x)....that every time I survive - I will MILK INSURANCE for every penny I deserve!

Yep. Being reimbursed for the bike is a given, but what about pain, suffering, and physical disfigurement?

The 50% off coupon comes and goes...last one expired last week. Should be another soon enough

With tektro brakes and an fsa crank, i wouldn't really call that a 105 bike.

I'd get the Wilier from Competitive cyclist.

Of course I'm biased.

Fuji Altamira with Ultegra might be in that price range from Colorado Cyclist and other places. Competitive Cyclist seems to have specials that are good too. These are if your pal is willing to do internet over LBS.

2012 or even older LBS closeouts might be a nice option too. Local to me, I think one place is selling Scott CR1 dressed with Rival for under $1500, not bad and easily upgradable cheap if you go ebay to both sell the Rival and buy the new groupset.

If I was starting from zero and needed a complete (no bike to ride in the meantime) a brushed aluminum CAAD10 with Sram or a Ridley Damocles (a little over the budget).

If I needed something a little more versatile a Milwaukee (Ben's Cycle - built by Waterford) road frame (with Waterford-built fork option) with a used/takeoff Sram mix and some handbuilt wheels.

My suggestion -

https://www.cannondale.com/2013/bikes...crankset-28007

but I could be biased.

EDIT: ahhhhh just noticed he's looking at MB's.

The MB Ti offerings get VERY good reviews. I would have gone that route if I didn't get a great deal on my Lynskey.
