To ride on not to ride?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To ride on not to ride?

I ride a mountain bike (Haro ICS 3.0). on the road. 5063 on road miles so far this year prior to the day before Thanksgiving and when i broke my left hand by riding into a gate across the road at 15 to 20 mph

So I guess all these miles makes me a roadie and subject to the sometimes brutal advice of this specific forum. Specifically, I need some advice about riding

Yesterday, I saw an orthopedic doctor and saw several signs that I should resume riding as soon as possible.

Sign No. 1. - My doctor's name. - "Dr. Go". If this doesn't mean start riding right away, then nothing does.

Sign No. 2 - Cast Color - Safety Orange! If I ride on road, drivers will easily see me and provide extra room. If I ride off road, then the deer hunters, will be less likely to shoot me!

Sign No. 3 - Cast Shape. This thing is perfectly shaped for me to grip the flat bar on my mountain bike and control the front brake and front derailleur !

Sign No. 4 - What Dr. Go did not say. He did not tell me not to ride. . . . But I did not ask him if it was okay to resume riding ASAP.

I am thinking about shopping for a new bike helmet at the local bike shop this afternoon (my old helmet was damaged in the wreck). A reasonably priced helmet would clearly be a 5th sign that I should resume riding ASAP. I'll also do some on line shopping for a new helmet as well.

I need your input. Resume riding ASAP or wait for the 5th metacarpal in my left hand to heal?

Call Dr. Go, ask him what happens if you fall on that thing, and see what he says. Then do what he says.

Ride on McKCNEWF, and damned he who says " hold, enough." Or follow your doc's advice.

Funny post. I might hold off though, it would really suck to be imperfectly holding the bar and then loose control and crash again. But a man's got to do what he does.

Sign No. 5: Arm in a cast will cause upper body muscular atrophy resulting in higher W/kg

Ride on a trainer until it's healed.

Also, shop for a road bike in the meantime. You're doing an impressive amount of miles--you might as well do it on the appropriate tool. I'm guessing you'd fly on a proper road bike.

yeah, this. ride on a trainer. And also agree with getting a road bike. If you mostly ride on the road you should ride a road bike. Its a big difference.

Don't ride outside until the cast is off. Ride inside on the trainer or at the gym, but not outside.

Update. Now that the pain drugs have worn off . . . . .

I have decided not to ride until I visit the doctor next Monday.

a couple signs against riding ASAP also appeared . . .
1. A wife who is angry that I am even considering to ride wih a cast
2. No helmets at the LBS that are at a price I am willing to pay.
3. A flat tire -- that will be difficult to repair with my left hand in a cast

Tell her to fix your flat tire and then ride without a helmet. Problem solved.

What's a doctor going to tell you? That's like asking lawyers questions.

You can ride - just don't do anything stupid - like riding into a gate across the road!

I raced MX with an external fixator holding my broken ulna together once many years ago.

Of course I was 20, in college and living at home at the time.

False signal. You need an aero shaped carbon fiber cast or you shouldn't be riding.

Yep! Truly funny indeed!

I'm glad those meds wore off in time for you to see the light. Now you sound like you're thinking more clearly! I think those meds caused you to misread signs!

Definitely don't ride until you're all healed up again.

Of course, when you do resume riding, it should be on a bonafide road bike and not that contraption that caused your injury in the first place.

How the hell did you miss seeing that gate? There's another kind of doctor, beginning with an O, that you should see before you start riding again.

I've seen lots of people play soccer with an arm in a cast so riding a bike shouldn't be that big of a deal. Watch out for gates though.
