What's in your Jersey pocket?

Okay yeah, everyone has a flat kit, spare tube, tire irons, micro pump, mini tool, money, I.D., iPod etc... Those are the no brainers. But what are the really cool and interesting, and innovative items that you carry in your kit? Anything unique, clever or recently discovered that you won't ride without? Love to hear from as many of you as possible!

MegaTom 11-30-12 11:40 PM

A .45 hand cannon.

cpach 11-30-12 11:54 PM

I like using a lightweight wallet all the time because I am too lazy to remove my ID and some cash before riding, and am afraid that they're more likely to get lost that way. Right now I have a flowfold wallet that I think is literally partially made with carbon fiber (part of recycled sail cloth) and weighs 16g: http://www.flowfold.com/product/ares-billfold. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't breathe at all, so when commuting in jeans my back pocket gets slightly sweaty. I previously owned http://www.simblissity.net/litefold_b-line.htm, which is a similar product. I like the flowfold better, although the simblissity version is half as heavy (8g!)

I've also carried a derailleur hanger at times, especially off road. A spare master link or pin is also a good idea. Fig newtons are my favorite thing to shove in a pocket and snack on.

Smartphones are pretty useful. Aside from Strava and checking directions, I once read a chapter of an ebook while waiting at the bottom of a hill my friend was descending like a wuss.

Simple surgical gloves so I don't get filthy and get my bike and kit filthy if I have to do anything with the drivetrain.

None of your damn business.

What holster? My 1911 is a little too heavy even being a carry CDP Pro II.

Actually those things go in a small seat bag. It's easier to leave the things that stay with the bike, with the bike. Don't have to gather that stuff up every time you ride.

Correct.

Wallet, phone, snacks in jersey pockets.

funny. Useful for rolling through the right neighborhood I suppose...

Velonaut 12-02-12 12:51 PM

Thanks gator! Once in a while I'll take along one of those skinny 8oz cans of Coke. Also Altoids smalls are a good carry. Don't underestimate the rejuvenating power of a strong mint when you're dehydrated and slightly gassed on a ridge line somewhere.

So you could probably use those little packets of hand wipes they pass out in BBQ restaurants....

Thanks for the clarification. Would you ever purchase one of those banana protectors they sell at some Japanese stores here in CA.? It's like a plastic case shaped like a banana to keep it from squishing.

Love it!!! All good stuff and very practical. Got any unique ideas specific to your personal discovery? Eg. I carry a small (palm size) snowboard lock for those times when I want to run into a store or coffee shop for two seconds and don't want to leave my Tarmac unlocked.

Yep! Thanks. My cousin thinks I'm insane for carrying gloves. I also keep a bottle of industrial hand cleaner in the shower to my wife's dismay.

Velonaut 12-02-12 01:16 PM

So, any ammo? I imagine hollow points might be lighter.... But seriously, I'm genuinely curious about the creative solutions that riders come up with to solve supply issues with limited cargo space.

Best application for pb&j is to use the heels of the bread to avoid the squoosh factor. Thanks!

My preference is rolled up flour tortillas, pb and jelly or honey! Takes up less space and fits better, snuggling up alongside the banana.

Uh... Just took a look at the LCP .380! That's a jersey pocket that packs a whollop! Do you have laser sighting?
