In my opinion the right way to look at this situation is a bike budget up to and including $10K. It opens up a lot of possibilities, but the less expensive options should not be dismissed on that basis.
I don't think it's selfish or crazy to want a unique bike or treat yourself to something nice, but it should also be the best possible bike for the job. |

Bill Holland would be my go to guy. Being from San Diego his reputation is beyond reproach and has been building custom bicycles for cyclist from all walks of life for decades. The exogrid technology matches titanium with carbon http://www.hollandcycles.com/ I just watched the video on the home page. Wow, those are cool bikes. |

Nah...as mentioned, jap bikes ain't got no soul. CB1100 finally imported to the US is a good bike however and a worthy successor to the venerable CB750.
The Brits nail the retro classic with Thruxton...about $10K. Best way to buy is very low miles lightly used...about $7K + big bore kit and/or cams/carbs. With 80hp to the rear wheel, you now have a bike with not only power but low end torque as compared to sport bikes you have spool up. More performance? Ducati Sports Classics....now out of production but still readily available...pick one...from Paul Smart to GT1000...all good. :) If you have a bigger budget and like to build something your own, a Thruxton is a great blank canvass. Below bike is heavily modified and done just right. |

You out yo damn mind. If you wanna get a brit bike at that price range it's street triple all the way. Power and performance beat poser chic any day of the week.

Street trip is a girl's bike. :) Its tiny. If you are a little guy its a nice bike but not for somebody full grown. If you need a high power naked std, then get a Speed Triple. More room and a lot more power. The thing about retro bikes is they look cool, are simple to work on, inexpensive to own and insure and keep you from going straight to jail or riding off the road.

Get a $3000 bike and give $7000 to a worthy charity. |

I certainly hope that the bike gods are deaf to your "pleas." It is her money, she can [STRIKE]spend[/STRIKE] waste it anyway that she wants.

A $10,000 bike will be functionally identical to a $3000 bike. I'd also say that if she doesn't know exactly what you want, then there's no reason whatsoever for her to drop $10,000 on a single bike. |

The Pedalforce option is good but only for someone who knows their fit and is willing to buy before riding. Pedalforce and Boyd are more expensive than sourcing the parts direct from Taiwan but you get support. With Pedalforce you can also custom build a bike using their parts selector.

Sure people can spend their money however they wish. Nice things are nice to have if you can appreciate them and cherish them. Spending a bunch of money on something you know little about is foolish squandering and morally reprehensible to me. Like somebody else noted having just one bike sucks. For 10 Grand I'd buy several. And still have money for a donation to the food bank or the Union Mission. |
what if she already donates 100k every year....
|
+1 with ahsposo, 10 thousand dollars. I cant buy even a darn car for less than that.
For the riding the chick does probably a f.... trek with paniers will be more than enough and probably wont be more than 700 bucks. She can use the other 9400 bucks going to the caribe and have a really good time. What a waste, non sense. I even think it is a trolling posting :) |

When the day comes that I am allowed 10k for one bike, it will most certainly be a Seven Axiom SL with Campy SR (maybe EPS, still not sure if I want to ever go that route) with Zipp 202 clincher's run tubeless. Only thing not 100% set on that bike would be the exact measurements of the tubes.
|
Specialized roubiax with ui2 and Zipp 303 clinchers. The compliance ride quality and reliable shifting should motivate her to ride more if she is not so much into cycling.

Amen how about giving $10k to charity and with the approx $3k in tax savings ,use that for a new bike. It must be real nice to have more money than brains. The common sense approach is to consider all bikes from $2k to $10k and get one that fits and is comfortable - it might be $2k or it might be $10k - but to say you want to spend $10k without considering the possibilities less than $10k is not how people who earned their money the old fashion way really go about spending their money. You set a budget and find the LEAST expensive bike that meet your needs. Only professional cyclists have a need for a bike anywhere near $10k. Just my $.02 - pls don't take offense.
