Edge 500 with USB+ Ant Stick

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Edge 500 with USB+ Ant Stick

might be a bad thing, I posted this in the electronics forum but it just doesn't get as many viewers there and this is a simple question!

Just got into the testing of a new video race program and need to get a USB Ant stick. thought I had the right one and now I see it is for the forerunner (bummer). Anyone know which stick I would get for the Edge 500 and where? And if anyone wants a garmin usb+ant let me know!

thanks!

The Edge 500 doesn't transmit anything via ANT+, it only receives. You need sensors on your bike (speed/cadence like the GSC10) to transmit directly to the USB stick.

The Garmin ANT+ stick that comes with Forerunner watches will work just fine.

I would keep the stick if you plan on doing any training with your computer, b/c programs like trainerroad.com you need the stick.

gotcha thanks, I have the speed/cadence sensor but the stick or maybe the agent isn't picking it up?

I tried the Garmin agent and it keeps saying that the stick is active but searching for a device. I was pedaling and the Edge was reading my cadence. is there something I need to do to pair the stick with the cadence/speed sensor?

I'll actually be using it for roller racing, but when I clicked on their "agent" broadcast button is said that it could not find the ant+usb stick. I assumed that since neither system was getting info I had the wrong stick.

let me know any thoughts,

you might need to reinstall the garmin ant agent, also you can contact garmin directly about this. I had to do that once they helped me fix it in just a few minutes. Can't remember the exact problem, but it had something to do w/ the agent.

thanks I'll retry that first. Strange that neither agent works though. how close does the stick have to be to the sensor?

I'll wager it's software. I recall having a tough time getting the ANT+ stick to work with trainerroad at first. I recall something about trainerroad.com saying not to use the Garmin agent. What program are you trying to use it with?

I agree. To upload data from the Edge 500, you connect it directly to your computer via USB cable -- standard USB on one end, mini-USB on the other. The devices shown in the Compatible devices will upload via the USB stick. The nice thing about the Edge 500 is when it is connected, it looks like a normal USB device when connected. You can go to the Activity folder on the 500 and copy the FIT data files to your hard drive, if you liek.

depending on the program you're using, you don't need Garmin ANT Agent.

TrainerRoad uses its own software to manage the USB stick. If ANT Agent is running, TrainerRoad gets mad and doesn't work. If the stick you have is a GARMIN that came with a forerunner watch, it WILL work.

I don't know how ANT agent works, but you need to pair your sensors to whatever software you're using - again, TrainerRoad needs you to do this.

Of note, your sensors can be paired to multiple things. My edge 500 still works even when my GSC10 is paired to my laptop.

thanks folks,

it's going to be used with Roller Racing (which I can't wait to try), he's working on a support for USB1 so we will see if that helps. With the Garmin agent also not working seems kind of strange unless it also won't work with USB1. Is there a trick to pairing the sensor with the stick that perhaps I am missing? As mentioned the agent says that the stick is active but looking for device and never finds it. I thought perhaps it was because the sensor was too far away from the stick but at this point I'd say they are within 4 or 5 feet from each other.

Are you spinning the crank or wheel while trying to pair? You need to do this....it won't detect the speed sensor if its just sitting there.

I plan on eventually buying a stick so I can use in on my trainer. How would you want for it?

Simon, yup I'm pedaling while it searches.

Carbon, don't think I'm going to sell it quite yet as the developer of Roller Racing is working on his agent to support USB1. but if it helps I think I bought it for around $29 through Amazon. Hope this helps.

Sure, thanks for responding. I am in no hurry right now to buy one yet but when I do, I will check out Amazon.
