Your Last Ride of 2012

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Last Ride of 2012

Tell us about your Last Ride of 2012 ...

Monday 31 December -- My father, Rowan, and I got out for a chilly but dry 12.44 km ride around the neighbourhood here in lower mainland BC. There was some sun, which was nice, but the temperatures were frosty. However, the scenery around here is beautiful ... mountains with snow.

And that's it for 2012!!

Had a nice ride over to my mother's house. Talked with her a bit and took the long way back home. It was quite nice out for this time of year, in the 50's and not too bad a wind with cloud cover.

Rode from my house in Fontana west to Claremont, then North up Padua/Mills and back down Baldy Road. Not a bad way to end the year

got out for 40 miles with my dad and his friend. it was a crisp 38* when i left my house, but the shining sun and lack of wind made it very comfortable.

Saturday - about 25 miles in a snow storm. Heavy wet snow, that started as a dusting when I left, but, ended as about 4" of heavy wet snow. Too wet to even take my camera out. I had to put on my rain jacket. In places I had to walk. It was around freezing, and dark. about 4.5 hours for 25 miles. Low gears and hard effort the last half of the ride. A great ride all kinds of good exercise !!

I went out this morning for 26 miles on SART from Yorba Linda to Corona, then I went out again this afternoon with my son and some friends. 15.8 miles on the Yorba Linda Trail, around local streets and local parks.

The highlight of the afternoon ride was threading through a bunch of geese at the park. One of the boys deliberately spooked them and the whole bunch took off. Happily, no one crashed.

I wasn't thinking of it as the last ride of the year, but unless I take a ride tonight, it will have been.
This morning I rode a little less than a mile each way to the coffee shop to work on a paper. The library was closed, or I would have gone there.
Not too cold, a little slush on the side streets.
A happy new year to all of you.

My last ride ended with 20 nervous miles on this tire after I threw in a boot.

It had maybe 2 weeks life left in it, so no big deal.

Headed out about an hour before dusk with temps right at the freezing level. Very light west wind. Ran into some icy patches about 5 miles in, which I crawled across at around 10 mph. Finally got in about 18 miles to end the year, with cold hands. Had to ride on the tops with fists clenched, steering with my knuckles. Temps in the high 20s F when I wrapped it up. My gloves are OK down to about 35 F, but not below freezing.

A 65miler yesterday. Great ride until the last 10miles, when I got terribly drenched by rain and really cold wind (and a little bit of hail in the hills above Newport Beach, California, was also in the mix). The real bummer was that I had looked at the forecast before going out, and there was no mention of rain. It was supposed to be in the 50's and sunny. Go figure.

One strange phenomenon discovered though is the fact that wool socks (Defeet Aireator wools) could be water-logged and still keep your feet warm. I mean, my shoes were heavy with water that had come into them from the bottom ventilation hole and the sleeves, but my feet stayed warm. I was cold all over, save for my feet.

Dunlops too.

My final ride o the year was an easy 25-miler on my dog-taxi around the beautiful coastal region where I live. Rode to work to finalize some year-end accounting stuff, then down to the gourmet spice-shop for some tikka masala spices (closed, despite the "Now Open" banner) and to the gourmet market for some fresh blackeyed-peas, for tonight's traditional goodluck supper.
Chilly, brisk, and beautiful; every fluid stroke of the pedals was relished.
Despite temps in the mid to low-60's, I still rode in shorts and short sleeves and finished in a light sweat (only one dog in the front):

Now I'm taping the bars of my beloved Look Hinault and waiting for the Designated Driver calls to start rolling in.
