This or That? Purchase advice!

Hello,

I have $450 or so to spend on cycling goodies. I am debating on whether to get a Garmin 910XT to record my triathlon training, or finally upgrade my cycling shoes.

I have a Garmin Edge 500 on my bike, so my cycling data is squared away. I would, however, like to have the information and motivation that comes with that information for my swims and runs. Yet, as many of you know, data or no data does not prevent me from training. My swims, rides, and runs are coordinated by a fairly experienced coach that I work with here in Taiwan.

My other option is to replace my shoes. My current shoes are a Taiwan no-name brand. Hard plastic, velcro straps...very entry level. I can feel them flex on hard climbs, the velcro has its inherent disadvantages of being either too loose or too tight in spots....but nothing is a show stopper. They work, just not super well.

So....here is my query. If it were you...would you get the Garmin, or a pair of Gaerne Carbon G.Chrono shoes?

I know there are many other great shoes. (I would prefer to buy Giro Trans in terms of price/value, but cannot buy from local company in Taiwan) The Gaerne are stocked by my LBS and I would like to support it and I think these shoes are great.

I ride 300km a week in good weather, these days, about 150km a week. Mostly hills/mountains (e.g. 1200m of climbing per 25km which includes going back down the mountain!).

Swag....indeed! And the black and red are a perfect complement to my black and red Scott Foil 20....and a Garmin...it's just a plastic watch...ahhh....my arm is getting twisted to give in to the Italian carbon!

ok i'm going to derail the thread....are you happy with your LBS in Taipei and have you had your cables changed by them? I was quoted nearly NT2000 for the job. not sure if that is the reasonable.

Well, I'm going to be the dissenting vote. I love my Garmin 910. Best watch I've ever owned. And, the triathlon feature (you can go from swim to T1 to bike to T2 to run so easy!) makes this a heck of an investment.

That sounds about right for a good shop. My shop is the same price, maybe the same shop! I think they'll do it a little cheaper if you bought bikes there. Price does not include new tape either.

And still on the fence...garmin or shoes!
