Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - Inside and Out - January 5/6

First weekend of the new year. Are you riding outside? Inside? Or are you doing other sports? Sticking to those resolutions?

Friday - 65 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes on the rowing machine

Saturday - a little bit of walking outside

Sunday - 50 minutes on the treadmill, 15 minutes on the rowing machine, 45 minutes on the spin bike, and some extra weights and walking.

Rowan and I have both been quite active since we returned to Canada. On December 21, we started going to the gym, and fortunately, we were also able to get out for 4 relatively energetic rides outside on Dec 31, Jan 1, Jan 2, and Jan 3.

My father (who is in his 70s) joined us for all the outside rides except Jan 2.

33.6 miles today with a group of friends. It got to 45 degrees, but we had a little wind (10 to 18 mph). Still a good ride for the first weekend of Jan.

135 mile perm yesterday, the "Old Dennis" route. Cold but clear, so pretty decent weather for this time of year. I'm reading for some warmth, though.

This afternoon, 45 miles trying to check out a new perm route. Roads that I'd been on before, but I forgot how rough they were. They're paved, just rough. Argggh.

1/5 ~ 25.4 miles with 1,528 feet of elevation gain in zone 2 at a very pleasant 45 degrees
1/6 ~ 33.2 miles with 2,513 feet of elevation gain also in zone 2. A little cooler at 41 degrees with a cold 12-15mph wind

I have tomorrow off work and have a longish (50miles??) flatter ride planned.

Really can't complain about the weather for the first week of January on the mid-west.

Saturday, we did the first of the SIR Winter Training Series rides on our tandem. 39 miles and about 2500' of gain. It only rained for about an hour and we finished on dry roads. Temps in the low 40s. We had a good ride, very fun, 63 bikes. We were a long way from DFL, which was nice.

The weather in Thailand is perfect riding weather - generally 72 F at 7 am and rising to only 85 F at 11 am with light winds that develop into stronger breezes. Clear blue skies all day.

Saturday - My first ride of the year. My brother and I rode our usual training loop around Souvarnabhumi airport with lots of other bikers enjoying the great cycling weather. We rode for 70 km and then I rode another 45 km on my own for a total of 115 km in 4 hours with only drink refill stops. I felt great and could have gone for more but I had to be home by noon.

Sunday - My legs were a bit stiff at first but I rode any way because this was my New Years's resolution. I rode 100 km solo but had to stop for 5 min for a pb&j sandwich halfway through the ride. I completed my ride in 3 hr 30 min nevertheless.

Monday - Not to rub salt into the wounds of my fellow northern hemisphere bikers, but I decided to swim instead. I swam 30 laps (1.5 km) in an outdoor pool - the water felt chilly at about 80 F, I think.

37 degrees. Three thousand feet of elevation. Less than thirty miles.

No rain :)

Sometimes I miss SoCal.

Friday: 50k ride down to the bay and back.
Saturday: 5k hike
Sunday: Nothing. It was raining in San Diego which I'm sure is some signal of the end of the world.

65 miles, small group. 16.5 mph, cold, finished before the rain started, hungry.

First ride of the year and first in more than 30 days. 23 miles of rolling hills. 53 degrees at start, sunny skies, light winds. First 7 miles sucked...couldn't find a rhythm...and then things got better. 30 day layoff with a 2 week cold and holiday eatin' in the middle really play havoc on your fitness level.

No riding all weekend.

Worked on my bikes and put away all of our Christmas stuff instead.

Doing this next weekend: http://stinkyspoke.org/

1/5 45-mile ride with Pro Pedals. It was 18F when we started at 7:30AM, but at least the sun was out.

1/6 36-mile ride with a friend. It snowed a little Saturday night, and we were supposed to have a group ride starting at 9AM. We waited until 9:30, and then set out with eight in the group. After 4 miles of wet roads and slushy, icy shoulder, six guys said they were turning back, so the two of us kept going and had a nice ride. Once we got to the unshaded country roads we were fine, and the scenery was great, with all the farms covered in a dusting of snow.

Friday night: gym treadmill and weights
Saturday: hiking with light snow still on the ground, beautiful views and cheese, tomatoes and Viognier wine for lunch overlooking Harpers Ferry, WV
Sunday: 38 miles. But the highlight was stopping for a snack on the Georgetown (Washington, DC) waterfront and taking pictures for a couple who happened to be there. He got down on his knee, pulled out a ring and proposed. She said yes and I rode home with a smile.

Monday -- 50 minutes on the treadmill, 50 minutes on the spin bike, 20 minutes on the rowing machine. I was soaked with sweat by the time I was done!!

alexaschwanden 01-07-13 07:45 PM

Sunday: 65.7 miles and it was fun.
