Well, I heard a loud pop today halfway through my ride. I went into denial for a sec cause it didnt seem like I was leaking any air and I thought I had jsut shot a rock off, Then a tap tap tap tap on the cement (the big ass nail hitting the ground) made me stop and look. I was so pissed, I had just got some Michlin Pro race foldables for X-mas, and now the back one has a nice little hole in it. I still don't see how I got this thing stuck in my tire, it went all the way through , and still had 3 inches stuck bent along the tire. I worked
at a car tire shop the past 2 summers and have seen some crazy **** stuck in tires, whats the biggest thing you have had stuck in your rubber?

anyway...you think that's bad? try getting that same nail stuck through your tire, then your slime liner, then your slime tube, then your rim strip, and THEN through your rim! this has happened to me twice -- both times they were sheetrock nails. the first time, i didn't have anything to pull the nail out of the rim, so i had to call for a ride home. the second time, i had my leatherman tool with me, so i was set.

I had a horseshoe nail go thru my tire and out the other side. I had a slime tube which was useless as the air and the slime came bursting out of this hole.

I put in a spare tube and was on my way. However, being conscientious and not wanting to be the litterbug, I had to stuff this blown leaking innertube full of slime into my jersey pocket. That was the first and the last time I ever used that stuff.

I was coming down a hill on a very high speed, around 38 mph, seven or so miles from home, on the return leg. I felt my front soggy. Stopped, upon inspection I found a truly giant roofing shingle staple in my tire. Must have been 5/8" W x 1" L . Normally the only things I find in my tires are glass shards from the dumbasses that smash bottles on the side of the road. I don't live in thornville like some folks.

BTW, Jeff, the 4 inch nail story blows my mind. How did it get an angle to enter?

Inch and one half construction screw. Went through tire, slime tube (along with friggin mess as mentioned in previous post) and nicked the inside of the rim. Was able to smooth the rim enough with the little sand paper in the patch kit, then stoned it out later at home. Extra tube and patch kit came in handy. Be careful those screws are black and impossible to see on asphalt.

Mtn bike, knobbies, down an dirt alley. Went in on an angle. I stopped, went 'oh a tack' pulled out a honkin' HUGE nail.
PSSSSssssssst. Scratched the inside of the rim, but didn't do any damage other than the 3 holes.

Says something for Mavic, good metal.

I'm up in Canada..glad we don't have those piramid spike seeds -'goat heads'? Whatever you call 'em.

a kid on a bmx bike. . .

I was on a long ride, kids come off of a side street looking at each other, not the road I'm on the circle around to go back up their street and wham!! right into my rear wheel. I was so shaken up and just glad that no one got injured that I sent them on their way only to realize that my rear tire was flat and 4 of my spokes were ripped in half.

yeah, back in california goatheads really ticked me off.

The answer was puncture-resistant tires, tire liners, and thorn-resistant tubes. This left one with few tire choices sadly...or learning to live with carrying two to three extra tubes at a time

A buddy of mine got a safety pin stuck in his tire in a race once. Ok, so it's not so big, but the crazy part was that it refastened after going into his tire. Seriously.

When I was in high school I worked at my Dad's gas station. That was in the days when those were places that worked on cars.

Anyhow, I pulled an unbroken wooden popsicle stick out of a tire. And a porkchop bone.

Well, no interesting nails or so in my tire, but i did got hit at a verrryy low speed (like 10 km/h). I was just cruising trough a living area (suburbs..) and a little kid on a bike hit my rear-brake disc... kid fell off her bike, I didn't. Well, I didn't even had the time to ask her if she was okay, she raced away. Disc was ready for replacement though.

No. The real answer is to develop a sixth sense about where they might be and avoid that area at all costs. Works the same way for rattlesnakes.

And if you can't develop the sixth sense, learn how to patch - tires not snake bits, those are different. Loose Screw sells Rema Tiptop patches by boxes of 100 - enough for about a season.

Sheet metal screw on day 3 riding my new Torelli with new Vittoria tires. Dead center in the front tire tread but it was easy to spot as it zipped by under my nose & I got stopped before the tire went flat. Fortunately it was a short screw & the rim was undamaged. A co-worker once flatted near our workplace with a nail through the tire, tube & double wall rim. Came out right between 2 spokes.

I don't know about large objects in my tires, but I have had songs stuck in my head for days at a time. :-)
