How light can you get a...
63 + cm bike...?
Well that is a good question... I just saw a Orbea that shattered what I can call light (14.8 POUNDS) with no pedals or seatpost. This is by far the lightest 63cm bike I have ever seen. Unfortunity I could not ride it... with the 6000 dollar price tag I would be afraid too. I have riden madones that were in the 17.3 pound range and others (like the giant tcr 0) and others in the 16- 18 pound range.
What is the lightest 63cm bike you have seen? In carbon? In Aluminum? I know the CADD 7's are quite light as are the carbon 110s...
For myself here is my interpretation of light... With a frame that almost anyone can afford (not a 2500 dollar carbon frame...)
Trek 2100 63cm 2005 model
ZR 9000 Aluminum Frame with OCLV Carbon Seatstays...
Full Dura Ace Double 10 Speed Drivetrain
7800 Double Dura Ace crankset 180 mm (53-39)
7800 Front Dura Ace Deraileur (Double)
7800 Rear Dura Ace Short Cage Deraileur
7800 Dura Ace Double STI 10 Speed Shifters (Not installed in photo)
Dura Ace 10 Speed 12-27 Cassette (Not installed in photo)
7800 Dura Ace front and Rear Brakes (Not installed in photo)
There parts just arrived on Friday when the photos were taken...
Bontrager Race XXX Lite Carbon Seatpost
Bontrager Race Lite Saddle
Bontrager Race Lite Carbon Fork
Bontrager Race 130mm Stem and Handlebars
Race X Lite Areo Wheelset (1700 grams)
Vittora Rubino Kevlar Tires
Speedplay X5 cromoly pedals
Shimano Flight Deck Wireless Computer
Niterider integrated Trailrat 2 Lighting
Weight -- 19.81 pounds without lighting system, pump or bag.
Future Upgrades
Bontrager Race X Lite OS Handlebars
Bontrager Race XXX Lite Carbon Stem (130mm)
Bontrager Race XXX Lite carbon 110 fork
Estimated final weight -- 18.9 pounds
Lowest Possible weight 17.5 pounds estimated. (With normal full carbon wheelset, record carbon and a very lite saddle).
Original weight -- Approximatly 23 pounds (if I remember right)
I rode this bike all day yesterday and it rode absolutly awsome... even at 22.3 pounds fully loaded. In race form it is a rocket ship. Most of this is to is very low rotating mass...

I think you could get a 63cm bike down to 15 pounds without tooo much trouble. you just wont do it with that frame. I've seen the caad8s out now, they are insanely light. build it with full record and ti bolt kit, some 1000-gram tubular wheels, and I think you could do it. I mean, there is a guy on here who's got a 15 pound lemond zurich, which is like a 4 and a half-pound frame.

I definitly know that I can not really do it with this frame. It is going to take a full carbon frame with either the dura ace like this one or record with probably ya tubular or light clincher wheels.
What I like about mine is that is not super light but increadbly strong. One day I may swap all this to a full carbon frame (or more likely make this a crit bike and get a nice light full carbon for road riding).
Of course it takes money... My issue is that for any bike to get into 180 mm cranks you might as well go dura ace...
In the end I do not consider putting nice components and parts on this type of bike a waste of money looking at some of the others in its price range. This bike feels right, not that it would not feel better if it was 3 pounds lighter but...
When I am down to 200 pounds then we will talk. BTW how much more do you think this frame weighs compared to a full CF one...
Of course you could get a madone SSL bike at 14 pounds (for 7500 dollars).
BTW arording to weight wenies the 2300 (same frame) is 1500 grams + headset so about 1600 say compared to 1280 for the 5.9. We are talking 1.5 pounds max difference (the madone weighs 17.5 pounds stock compared to my 19.8 pounds now (18.9 with matching parts. The 1.5 approx pounds (maybe 2) is in the frame and wheelset... The frameset is 2500 dollars approx so with the sell of my frame (estimated 500 - 600 dollars) I would be paying approx the same as the new 5.9 retails...

The only difference between a larger bikea and a smaller is going to be the frame (and crank length probably). Thus, take whatever the lightest bike you can find, add whatever the weight increase is to go to a larger frame and there's the lightest XXcm bike. Durability on the other hand is something entirely different.

In a crash I would be more likely to do damage to the full cf bike then the Al bike with the same other parts... hmmm... more durable... perfect crit bike

A "virtual" 64 compact frame ~ 17.5 lbs with pedals. ~ frame 990 grams
My three year old Litespeed Ghisalo is a "virtual" 64. It's a compact frame. I built it up as a century bike, not as a super light bike. It has older Ksyriums (when there was only one type,700g front 900g rear). It is D-A 9 speed. With pedals, two bottle cages, a flighdeck computer, a heavyish comfortable seat, an uncut aluminum steerer for a tall bar position, and the
Specialized gel handlebar pads and tape combo, and an aluminum handlebar. It comes in at 17.5 lbs.
It would be easy to get to 16.5 lbs
There are a few 15 lb Ghisalos around,I have seen a 14 lb but it was smaller.
The medium/large frame of that year was 1.98 lb
they increased the seat tube size, now that size is 1.99 lb.
My extra large is 2 lbs 2.92 ozs.
OR
990 grams. for a "virtual " 64 ~ no rider weight limit, lifetime guarantee.
SUPER durable. I have 6500 road miles on it. Plenty of rough roads and a little dirt.

there is a guy on here who's got a 15 pound lemond zurich
I think it's a small frame size, and he's obviously spent hella cash on it (ie $250 Ti chris king headset).
58VW, check out the Scott CR1. One of the LBS' around here has some, I literally couldn't believe how light it was, unreal how light. I also saw a Merlin ExtraLight ($$$$$) at another LBS today.
CR1 is around $3,100 for centaur gruppo and Ksyrium Elites, 17 lbs, I'm sure your size will still clock in below 19. Sweet!
The Merlin is nice too, but considerably more money.

It seems like you an get those bikes lite if you have the cash. I guess the issue is durable vs lite as always... how would a 15 pound bike do in comparison to a 18 or 19 pound bike. I think CDale wins for light and aluminum... cf it is only a guess right now.

My caad8 frame (cannondale R900 europe) with pretty heavy Veloce groupset, Ksyrium Elite wheels, and heavy cheap tires weighs 8.5 kilo (17 pounds). It's a 60 cm. That tells something about the weight of the frame and fork. In a Dutch magazine test the 56 cm caad 8 frame was 1.265 kilo and the Premium fork 440 grams. So for Alu, it's light.

You guys ever wonder if going too light actually hurts you more than helps you?
I mean if stiff frame that weighs 100-200 grams more let's you get 5% more power effectively to the ground isn't it worth it?
BTW, what factors contribute to BB stiffness.

Anyone intereseted in seeing light bikes, even really stupid light bikes that would fold if you hit a speedbump should checkout light-bikes.com.
