I have only once experienced sitting on the toilet while leaning out over a bucket. It's not something that I'd like to go through again. 0200 Sat AM, a couple of the guys on my team are feeling a little off and looking a little green. By 1300 ~800 officer cadets had acute gastrointestinitis - GI tract opened up at both ends. At that rate of infection, there were far more producers of waste material than there were recepticles for it. It was an utter horror show. Toilets, sinks, showers - all in full use. I got it. Happily, never both ends at the same time, but many of my buddies were not so lucky. The few that didn't come down with it were running mops constantly. The single nastiest thing I have ever encountered. LC - here's more positive thoughts for your dad. DG |

I'll try to remember to video Bailey at his first attempt to leave the house. It should be entertaining. |
Credible leak of the iPad 5 - little smaller bezel, little thinner chassis. Staying the post-Jobs course, it seems.

I can't watch that video at work, but I assume related to this: http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2012...behind-th.html Time has proven over and over again that infantry without tanks die. Every once and a while somebody gets it into their heads that tanks are obsolete, and you can make do without. Or you can replace a tank with something like LAV-MGS (ugh) And then either (ideally) simulations or (far too frequently) real life experience demonstrates, once again, that you absolutely positively must have access to tanks if you want to win. However, since the fall of the Soviet Union, the threat of full-up tank armies blitzkrieging their way across Europe has diminished quite a bit. We're not going to see battles that result in hundreds of tanks a day being destroyed, probably ever again (knock wood). That being the case, the ideal ratio for a modern standing army is probably on the order of 3:1 infantry to armoured. So for every three deployable infantry battalions, you want a tank battalion - which really works out to "Every infantry battalion should deploy with a tank company in support, if they are going into a real fight". The exact force package you send will vary according to the threat, but having that ability is about right. Have a few extras for spares (tanks are very maintenance intensive and consume parts like crazy) and some strategic reserve, and you are good to go. Under that metric, Canada is a little bit light on the tank front - but we have the best tanks in the world at least. The US has WAY more tanks than it needs. And the Abrams doesn't suck, especially the newer upgraded ones. That option to defer the upgrade on tanks that aren't being used and save $3B seems like a no-brainer to me. DG |

P.S. Where is the next great tank battle going to be? Germany? Alberta? |
So, which part of my day, thus far, has been the most exciting? The breaking and entering or the smokin' CPU/Mobo deal? I think it's the computer parts - I scored an Intel Core i5 3750k and ASRock Extreme4 motherboard for a grand total of $209+tax. For those keeping score, newegg sells those items for $229.99 and $134.99 respectively.

Heh. I had my hands full with child, accessories and whatnot, walked out and realized that I didn't have my keys on me. And that the door had locked behind me. Wife works about 12 miles away and doesn't have a car, and I don't want to have to pay $400 for a locksmith if I don't have to. But it's winter in MN and I don't want my kid freezing his ass off, either. Checked all of the basement windows, but they were secure. Remembered that the bathroom window on the first floor hadn't been replaced with a newer energy-efficient one, so I wedged out the screen and the window popped right open. Of course it was still a smallish window about six and a half feet off the ground, but I managed to get my fat butt up and through, while the boy was distracted by his cup of cheerios. Ran through the house to the back door and boy still munching away contentedly. Surprised no one called the cops on me. Worthless neighbors.

I've consequently had Joe Cocker in my head all day.

I don't think it's breaking and entering when you access your own house.
