Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - February 1/2/3

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - February 1/2/3

First weekend of February already!! Are you cycling outside now, or inside? Riding with friends and family? Riding events? Or maybe cross-training?

Friday 1 February - lots and lots of walking ... and lifting, and carrying, and dragging.

We are back at the place we started our Round-the-World tour from, but today's journey from the airport to a little town about 140 km north, was quite an effort. Walking here, walking there. Lifting, carrying, and dragging the bags and bicycle boxes.

Depending on how tomorrow goes, we might be able to set the bicycles up and go for a ride on Sunday (maybe Saturday too, if tomorrow goes really, really well)

I will be chaperoning my son's weekend trip to Khao Yai, north of Bangkok. It is normally a climbing and descending training ground for a lot of Bangkok riders - but no riding for me this weekend.

Still, since we have to hit the road at 9 am ...

Saturday - I woke up at 530 am and got one my trainer at 6 and spun until 8 am. My two hour average was 175 watts at 95 rpm cadence and I finished the movie Judge Dredd - not a good movie. I could have ridden longer if I had been watching a longer, more interesting movie. The power meter numbers as well as the balance power meter readings for my left and right feet made the ride interesting. I think I like my SRAM Quarq power meter. So, I guess my initial FTP calculation of 179 watts was off since it would be unlikely that I could have been spinning at 95% of my FTP for two hours. But, I really do not like to re-try an all out suffer-fest FTP ride since I am not a masochist. I was wondering if I can assume that my 3 hour average is 70% of my FTP and back-calculate my FTP that way?

Today I rode 70.8 miles from palo alto to SFO airport and back, the weather was a nice 61F with little wind. I found a allen wrench on the side of the road.

Friday, I got in a 40 mile ride to Fort Jackson (Columbia, SC) https://app.strava.com/activities/39390954.
Hopefully will get in 90-100 miles more between Saturday and Sunday. Weather's been pretty cold and windy lately.

Saturday - a bit of walking. We're kind of getting settled in the new place. "Settled" being a relative term because we'll likely only be here for the month of February.

We went on a hunt yesterday to see what there was here in the way of sports facilities. I was hoping for a gym, but there is none. There is, however, a swimming pool ... and, of course, cycling and walking outside.

Saturday: 83.3 km out to Torrey Pines and back. I didn't get on the road until around 1pm and didn't think to bring my arm warmers. I was getting chilly around 5 (stupid flat halfway up a climb...*grumble grumble*).

Tomorrow I plan on taking full advantage of the Super Bowl and going east into redneck territory for around 100 km. I figure everyone who would run me off the road will be too busy watching the game.

left at 6:30, still fairly dark and was 29F when i left. met up with a couple friends and did our routine saturday morning route. Did a fair amount of climbing today, but with the cold air and wet pavement I just wasn't able to push myself like I was hoping for. oh well, at least I got out.

Sunday - 500 metres in the local outdoor swimming pool (Rowan did twice that) and 12.74 km on the bicycles, doing a little exploring around town.

Sunny, 27C, and a bit windy.

Got in 190 miles yesterday, doing a 300k.

We were riding along when Vickie says "There's an armadillo!" (They're common here, but not normally out in the daytime.) Then a half-mile down the road, we saw another one. We stopped for this one, and Vickie ran over to video it with her I-phone. Then Sharon was taking a picture of Vickie taking a picture, so I took a picture of Sharon taking a picture of Vickie taking a picture of the armadillo.

I wanted to see one when we were there, but none were out and about.

Did a nice ~75 mile (my Garmin freaked out toward the end) spin this morning. Met up with another BF'er about 19 miles in, rode up The Beeline (AZ 87) to Bush Hwy, then over Usery.
We spit a few miles into Mesa, then I headed back home solo (and into some winds).

https://app.strava.com/activities/39657488

Weather was great! Lows only around 50F, I guess it was about 60F when I got home. Overcast sky, and a little drizzle just as we crested Usery.

Did 103.7 km out to Alpine and back. Was originally going to go until the road ended near the casino and turn around there, but I had to race the sun home. It won.

https://app.strava.com/activities/39708004

However, I did see Chris Horner and someone in a Jelly Belly kit (dunno if pro or just fan) coming down Lake Jennings while I was climbing up. That was pretty cool. And yes, he waved back. Didn't even realize it was him until we passed.

49.2 miles yesterday (longest of the year so far), relatively flat (2000'). Beautiful sunny day, 68 degrees when I left, 72 when I returned. I rode solo for the first 30 minutes, then passed a guy. He caught up to me and asked where I was headed. I told him my plan and he asked if he could ride with me. I told him that would be ok. Over the next 2 1/2 hours the guy talked...and talked...and talked! It was truly unbelievable! Even when we had to ride single file, I could hear him behind me talking! Anytime I tried to say anything he'd give me about 5 seconds then just start talking over me. Topics ranged from climate change to Obama care to neutron stars to super bugs to over population.

Initially I thought he was slower than me so we rode a pretty leisurely pace on the outbound. After we turned around I started picking it up and he had no problems keeping up. As a matter of fact, there were a few places I surged ahead and he had no problem coming back onto my wheel...and usually right next to me to continue talking.

~60 miles saturday with a group. Nice day, unremarkable except for tire carnage- posted in 'mechanics'.

Focused on keeping shoulders relaxed.

Took our tandem for 44 miles on a cool day with no rain. Roads were wet and glass-strewn though, so a 4-flat ride. We were intending to do a 65 mile loop, but cut it short. Team morale was rather dampened by riding on underinflated tires and then fixing them. At least it wasn't raining. We put on our spare, a 23c Tricomp, at the last flat and TTed the last few miles, finally feeling good. This next week is an easy week, good, because we are tired. Then a 70 mile ride near Mt. Rainier next Saturday.
