Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which generation of Bontrager Race are you talking about--pre-2009, with the paired spoke pattern, 2009-2012 with evenly spaced lacing, or 20013 with the wider rim profile?

The paired spoke pattern generally sucked except for the very lightest riders. I see a lot of rims starting to crack around the spoke holes. In general, once Trek returned to even spacing the durability has improved. The Races are not particularly light or especially rugged, but I've seen worse on similarly equipped bikes. If you buy a new set of wheels, keep the Bontragers around for winter til you bust 'em.

I ride Bontrager Race Lite's, weigh 192 lbs and have not have one problem what-so-ever with them. Nice wheels.
Had Neuvation M28's before them and they were not as good.

I have Bontrager Race's from 2010. 3,000 miles on my Trek 7.7 FX and they have never been out of true. Oh, and I've been as much as 267 lbs.

I have the 2013. I heard they're only good for small amounts of training. Is this true?

Bingo. If they are pre- '09, then they are crap.

OK. Here's what I say. Ride the wheels you have now. If what "you've heard" is true, replace them when they crap the bed. If they hold up, file this under "what 'I heard' on the internet is as reliable as the message in a fortune cookie".

I have a set of the tlr version, and while i liked them, i thought the flexed a little too much for me. I'm 220 lbs, but the rode really nice, i just did not like the brake rub when it happened.

These came standard on my Domane 5.2 and I now have a bit over 800 miles on them. When I first got the bike, there was a pulsing sensation from the front wheel when braking (kind of felt like a car brake rotor in need of resurfacing). But I brought it back to the shop and they took care of it; I honestly don't even remember what the deal was but they have been perfectly fine ever since.

As someone who just likes to ride, I have no plans to change wheels unless something happens to these. I just did a 63 mile/6500 foot ride yesterday and the biggest compliment I can give the wheels is that I never even thought about them. I weigh in at about 195 lbs if that makes any difference.

I just replaced my old Race Lites with the 2013's on my Trek 2.3 and have no complaints. Have just over 1000 miles on them with zero problems.

I'm 6' 220 and had RL on my series four Domane- 2000kms no issues at all. My P1 series 6 Domane has RXL's no issues at all, great aluminum rim as far as I'm concerned.

As far as stock wheels go, they are pretty good, at least as nice as the lower end Mavics and lighter than the standard Shimano RS501 that come on other bikes. Being tubeless ready is a nice bonus.
