Here's two that my boss recommended to me as pretty easy:

later on May 7th is the Wine Country Century, starting in Santa Rosa http://www.srcc.com/

The terra bella has 4800' of climbing and the Santa Rosa one only has 3300'. Both are meant to be pretty easy and really pretty.

They're out there, and usually just as fun. Look at the websites for rides, they usually descibe the rides very well, and some provide a profile map showing the hills and flats. Most also offer various options for distance, i.e. 40, 60,80,100 miles. Everyone is part of the event, and you can take on the ride you are up to. It's all about having a great time with like minded folks, hope to see you there!

Go to Winnipeg in early August. They will hold their Muddy Waters 100 either August 7th or 14th.

You could not ask for a flatter ride than that. On the route there is 1 overpass (maybe 2), and one very small, insignificant hill.

As for "pretty" - if you're into fields of canola ..... Actually that ride isn't too bad for "pretty" - they run a lot of it along the river and then there's a bit that goes through a provincial park, so you've got some scenery.

I see that a lot of people are plugging the ride from their club...so here's mine:

This happens in mid july in central california.
Email me for a complete sales pitch.

This one isn't too difficult. A couple of climbs. Easily one of the most enjoyable days I've ever spent on a bike. Check out America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride.

There's the Great Western Bicycle Rally in Paso Robles, California over Memorial Day weekend. I've never been there but I know a few people who have gone and they say it's a blast. Here's a link.

The "Enchanted Circle Century" is a great century. It starts and
ends in Red River NM. It takes place the end of September. I
don't have an URL handy.

bikecenturies 02-19-05 10:42 AM

east, west, doesn't matter:

bikecenturies.com
centuryrides.com

They're like a club calendar - if your club happens to be the entire U.S.

I do the Tour De Cure for diabetes in Yountville/Napa on the first Sunday in May. You have to raise $100 on top of the registration fee. It has 1,385 feet of climbing, and the rollers along Silverado Trail. The Chico Wildflower in April has a lot of climbing, but they have a metric century that's flat. My knees haven't been the best lately, so I might see about the flat metric.

Add to that the Wine Country Century. It's about as flat as a California century gets. A really pretty ride, too.

The Foxy Fall Classic isn't too bad, goes up in the hills around Lake Berryessa, so you can check it out ahead of time. The metric century I've completed-one hill about 1/4 mile long. Very easy, fun ride.

Another flat century in N. Cal is Bike Around the Buttes, Sat. April 16, starting in Sutter. Nice ride and well supported.

Be careful on the Wildflower. The regular metric century has a 2000' climb, while there's a flat option that you need to specify.

bikecenturies.com and centuryrides.com both include a difficulty level for all of their rides.
Some are general while others are very specific, including feet of vertical gain along with the mileage.
Some even mention temperature, wind and other factors you're likely to encounter on a particular ride.

CAAD5AL 03-03-05 03:13 PM

The STP is definitely a thing to behold - unbelievable number and range of people turn out for that one, and the miles just fly by because there's so much going on. Might be worth working out the logistics if you can swing it - as 55/Rad said, do it in one day, a double is somehow easier than back to back singles, plus you can say you've done one (or 6 if you get hooked).

townandcountry 03-03-05 03:23 PM

There's also the Strawberry Century in Lebanon, Oregon June 11 and the Fat Tire Festival in Oakridge (not sure when that one is).

Happy trails.
