Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help on Bike Build?

I'm thinking of building a bike in a few months. Currently i have $1500 saved up and ill be selling my old bike for $1100 as soon as i decide the cost of the bike ill be using. So ill have about $2600 and i can also get another $1k if needed

First, whats the difference between SRAM Red, Force? Ill be willing to mix and match, even some rival items if there isnt a big difference and parts are better. Ive heard SRAM Red Shifting is better then force. Force RD is better then Red, and rival FD can also be used without it making a difference. This might just be for older models though. What do you guys thing?

I want an alloyed bike because i heard they last longer then carbon. I havent decided yet on what frame but at the moment, thats not important.

Wheelset: Reynolds Assault Carbon Clincher Wheelset $999.99

Frame: Felt?

Parts: Mixture of SRAM Red, Force

How are Reynolds Assault? Anyone use them?

I'd go SRAM Force for everything except the front derailleur and the levers. There isn't much of a performance increase with the other components, really just a weight savings.

oops, sorry about that. The new SRAM Red. That's assuming all other Force bits are also the new SRAM Force.

I just built my caad up with 2013 sram force. great stuff, but the new 2013 Red levers and its yaw FD gives some sweet benefits.

And Nagrom's CAAD is saweeet!!!!
I am not an expert on SRAM, have not used it but I had tried it just riding bikes. From my experience you notice a difference if you take a big jump, say from Apex to Force. As for whees you can save some coin and buy the Boyd carbon clinchers on cloesout for $860

Lot of guy's on this forum (and race teams) use them and love them. I have ridden his alloy wheels but not his carbon. Boyd is a forum member himself and if you contact him through his website he responds pretty fast.

Force RD i better than Red? I think you got that backwards. In the past the Force FD was better but heavier, but it didn't flex like the Red did. But with the yaw feature, I'd have to lean towards Red being superior.

2013 Force shifters are zero loss in both shifters, which is a great feature. I have the old Red and the old Force and much prefer having zero loss on the rear. As for front shifting, I have an Ultegra FD which solves the Red problems and so see no need for a yaw derailleur.
