Aesthetics... How anal are you?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Im very ocd with not just not how my bike looks, but what I'm wearing as well. I know I'm far from pro, but I have always been the king of person to at least look pro. That's with any sport I do. I know some people just don't care which is fine also. Just like most things on here, its a personal thing.

Ok, so this is how OCD I am:

Fulcrum's 2013 decals are just black & white with no other color.

So I'm having my LBS try to source a set of these new decals from one of their US distributors, so that I can rebadge my wheels to be aesthetically pleasing.

Of course, I will otherwise just de-badge them and run them stealth.

Black and white bikes go with everything.

Never ride white bikes after Labor Day.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Never mentioned anything about a relationship advice. Never mentioned anything about "how to's" either. Dude wanted to see my bike, he came over, and started blabbering. I posted what I had experienced and was curious if any of you are like... "this dude". How is that asking for a relationship advice? Anyway, it's early Friday and I may have read your post wrong.

Back to "anal dude"... actually, he's an active cyclist and runner. He's pretty anal, but never thought he'd be a hundred fold when it comes to this hobby.

He's been bugging me about when I'm gonna get my road bike, then now that I have one, I get this attitude. To top it off, I basically try to shrug the whole conversation that night and asked when he wants to go biking. Maybe he can give me some new tips since it has been 20 years from when I was active at this hobby. He said for me to build my core first and when he thinks I'm ready, only then he'll ride with me. Anyway, a buddy of mine finally had a chance to see my bike last night. First thing he said is that it's too black and I should flare it up a bit. Then he got down to the color of my helmet and shoes. That since I have a black on black bike, that I should be all black as well. Or at least not white nor red nor blue but flouro-green or yellow for visibility. Then he said since I have a white helmet and shoes with some hint of red, that I should change the saddle and handlebar tape to white with white wall tires and red anodized brakes. Here I am looking at him if he was joking or not, and really... he is pretty serious... Somebody woke up with a stick up his ass.

Then he picked up my bike and said it's too heavy. I believe with pedals and cages, it's either high 16 or low 17... I'm happy with it, but here he is telling me to spend more cash to switch out the wheels, to change the drive train to Red, blah blah blah blah blah.

I'm about to unfriend this so-called buddy just because he irritates me. Do any of you guys get this anal about bikes whether it's yours or not? Just wondering...
Compared to your "friend," I'm not anal at all. In our society, there are as many different preferences as there are people. He's just 1 person out of millions and millions - pretty insignificant. No need to cater to someone else's insecurities! If he cannot respect your preferences, or what you're ok with, then I don't think that he is much of a friend anyway. If you like it, be fine with it.

How do you feel about mismatched tires, say a Vittoria on the front and a Michelin on the rear?

There are some rules that are silly and some that make sense. Here are the ones that make sense:

Aluminum bike parts should be silver - anodized silver. Coloured components are an indication of an inferior product that the manufacturer has tried to bling up with colour. Or worse, a cheap product that has a poor finish that has been painted to smooth it out. With just the native silver finish and a clear anodization to prevent oxidation, it is easier to inspect for critical flaws - such as cracks.

Wheels should have more spokes in the rear that the front. The rear wheel bears most of the weight and takes most of the big hits. Same goes for tires and rims. Rear tires and rims can and should be made to a heavier spec. than fronts. If you have the same tires and rims on the front and rear, you either have too much strength in the front or too little in the rear.

Stickers: why should you be an unpaid rolling billboard for a bike company? Small discreet stickers are OK. An exception is if your stickers are funny or ironic. Example: I am hunting high and low for a 1999-2003 vintage team bike with the garish USPS colours. I am also looking for bikes with Enron and Parmalat themes.

Even if he was at the same fitness level sounds like someone I would not want to ride with anyways. I bet he is the type to not stop when someone gets a flat etc.

lets see, my shoes are black, shorts are black, typically wear white ankle socks and white jersey, black gloves, carbon fiber pattern bell helmet. current bike is white/blue, black bar tape and seat, mavic aksium rims have red lettering on 'em and I don't care. from a clothing standpoint for the most part I buy stuff that is pretty neutral so it never really ~mismatches~ anything I might be riding. like svtmike, I won't mismatch tires if I can help it, a habit I got into when I used to road race motorcycles (like tires had similar 'stick' and similar radius profiles). I'm not anal about it but I am cognizant of it.

I suppose that's because it's something cultural.
