Aesthetics... How anal are you?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should be OK before Labor Day. White after Labor Day just isn't done.
Good thing I opted out the Domane.

I don't know. I'm a Design Engineer with a strong emphasis on Industrial design and aesthetics. I personally like black frames with red/white interplayed tastefully. It is understood in the bike world that saddle color should match hndlbar tape color, tire stripe being the same is really cool.

Labor Day in the US is at the beginning of September. There's an old school of thought said you bring out your white clothes on Easter and put them away for the winter on Labor Day.

So build your core ... and go ride by yourself.

How difficult is this????

Anyway, a buddy of mine finally had a chance to see my bike last night. First thing he said is that it's too black and I should flare it up a bit. Then he got down to the color of my helmet and shoes. That since I have a black on black bike, that I should be all black as well. Or at least not white nor red nor blue but flouro-green or yellow for visibility. Then he said since I have a white helmet and shoes with some hint of red, that I should change the saddle and handlebar tape to white with white wall tires and red anodized brakes. Here I am looking at him if he was joking or not, and really... he is pretty serious... Somebody woke up with a stick up his ass.

Then he picked up my bike and said it's too heavy. I believe with pedals and cages, it's either high 16 or low 17... I'm happy with it, but here he is telling me to spend more cash to switch out the wheels, to change the drive train to Red, blah blah blah blah blah.

I'm about to unfriend this so-called buddy just because he irritates me. Do any of you guys get this anal about bikes whether it's yours or not? Just wondering...
I'm still a little picky with the aesthetics of the bike , but at least I don't worry so much what Im wearing. I'm running around in a velomobile so nobody can see what I'm wearing anyhow. I could ride around naked and nobody would even know.

Yes. But it doesn't bother me on other people's bikes. They can do what they want.

Other people can do what they like and follow schools of thought as they please, but personally I don't do "white clothes" at all.
Thanks for the insight, anyway.

Anyone with aesthetic tendencies reading this able to point me to a 6 degree, 140mm stem in simple black or white, for my Ridley Compact?

It drives me nuts that I can't find one without graphics.

Since we're on the topic, would you say white hoods?

Wish the fork was cleaner looking, too, and that I could remove the "Sharp Edge Design" on the downtube.

This question that you pose has been around since time began, Do you buy things because of someone elses vision , or your own? Bike manufactur's are just like car companies, They put out a product that has to please a wide band of people of every shape and size. Should a 56cm frame ride the same for some one that weighs 115lbs or 260lbs? Should color combinations please everyone or just a few? Bike companies have a bottom line! They can not afford to put the best of everything on a product and make any money, Hence mixed groups! A lot of people think if they put the best of group components from different brands on a bike they will build a perfect bike , But all they are making is a mess! Shimano, Sram, Campy, FSA, or whoever designed their groups to work with there products, Dura Ace should be with Dura Ace , Super Record should be with Super Record, It was designed to work that way!

Now that I have that out of my system, I buy a bike because it is what I like, I build bikes in my vision of what I want them to look like, I dress how I feel, I match my bikes when I ride, I have three pairs of shoes in Black, White, and red. I have a titanium helmet, a black one and a white one. I chose my clothing company as Castelli and stay within that Brand. I have seen so many judgemental people on this site and in life, but what it all boils down to is jealasy! Plain and simple. I have had someone pick up my 14lbs bike and proclaim to all that "this thing weighs a ton"! I then picked up his 21lbs bike and just looked at him ,as I shook my head and walked away! We need individule thinking back, we need style back, where is my mancrush when you need him?! Cipo Help us please!

I'm not anal about other folk's bikes, but I'm so anal about mine, I "squeak". I have several road bikes and my oldest I bought new in 2000. A lot of times when I show up to group rides with it some make a comment about me just buying a new bike when it's really 12 years old.. I like to keep my bikes clean and well maintained and don't give a rats a$$ about what people say about my bike OCD. You ride your bike the way you want, let me ride my bike the way I want to and we will all be happy.

Taste is not a matter of anality, stuff about how much color, which color with which item, that's just aesthetic bull****. True OCD is a whole different matter. I am extra-ordidnairly anal when it comes to work issues but with cycling who cares what does or does not match with which ass wipes opinions about color and stuff.

I agree with you totally! But why do others always want to place their vision on our own? My Brother does exactly what you stated in the first post. I have three personal bikes, all personalized by me, I usally only have two in my stable, but I built one too good to dismantle, so I'm stuck with three. I build bikes for people in my spare time and they pay me a lot for them, they give me their visions and let me loose. I put the best of everything on them, My most challenging one was a Burberry bike, that bike got me three other orders! My wife hated it, but my customer loved it! So that was all that counted. I AM VERY ANAL! about bikes, they have to be clean! The chains all have to be clean enough that you can touch them at any time and only get the lightest hint of black. They Must Gleem! and they must be memorable! I'm sorry if you misunderstood my post, but we are kind of on the same page , that is of corse allowing for some differenses. But do you agree that real style is gone from the sport of cycling?

It drives me nuts if I have two different length stems on my tubes.
Same if the logos on the tires are not lined up with the logos on the wheels.
I count the number of wraps of tape on each side of the handlebar, and they have to match.
I won't go as far as matching my clothes to my bike, that's too much, but I can see having a helmet match a bike.

What a tool. Sounds like a real jerk. Not because he is OCD, but because he is belittling you for not being like hi. A real friend would be happy for another friend getting a new bike and would let him ride with him to show him the ropes. This reminds me of the girls in 5th grade that would stay friends with the little diva that treated them like crap everyday. There are plenty of nice people to be friends with, so do yourself a favor and never waste your time on dorks like this. Life is too short. For some reason, I feel that you will continue to gravitate towards this guy if what he has done say far hasn't alienated you by being such a jackass. Hopefully, I am wrong.
