I tried the Louis Garneau leg warmers tonight for the first time. They worked great. The wind was cutting through my L/S jersey and base layer but my legs were very comfortably warm the whole ride. Whatever they use to block the wind just works. It was chilly for SoCal this evening.

I have two pairs of nashbar leg warmers. They're probably my best value piece of gear - bought them almost 10 years ago for $20 a pair and they're still fine. They're good down to about 45F, below that they start getting a bit cold and tights are a better fit. I haven't had any issues with breathability, they're thicker than bike short lycra but work well.

I ordered some pearl izumi ones of amazon for $25 or so and they work great. Just put them under the shorts and make sure they are nice and high and they won't slip, I've had them on for 4+ hour rides and no slippage. If you get up and walk around a lot off the bike sometimes you have to adjust a little though.

I have a set. Very happy. They do seem to run a bit big meaning at 6'3" the large still seems pretty long. They were on sale recently on their site for $35 so you might want to shop around.

Maybe they don't have thrift stores in the UK. If you buy a sweater for $7, it ain't brand new.
But it's fine after you wash it. |
I've never tried a pair that stay put. For me, it's embro + summer shorts if cool, embro + knickers if its cold, or tights if its freezing.
