anyone have the Motobecane Sprint?

I know it's from BD and I've read up about BD...I'm asking about the bike.

It's ultegra, carbon Fork, Carbon Seatstays, Butted AL Frame for $900

I am looking for a first road bike, and have checked the LBS but not too impressed with bang for the buck (eg $750 for all AL with Sora). I have test rode a few bikes and decided on 105 as a minimum component spec, but don't want to go over $1000.

I am looking for a comfortable bike but fast - not a heavy tourer but an endurance road type.
I assume carbon fork and seat stays contribute to comfort. Also plan to run 25 or 28mm tires. I want to work on endurance, and want a bike that is a pleasure to ride for hours on end.

Also have a triple now and enjoy that so a triple is a plus for me, not a minus.

Any input?

I have and older Windsor Fens with 105 that's been great. It is much like the Sprint, with a parts spec that is one level down and non-carbon stays. This type of BD bike is utilitarian, but reliable and comfortable, and surprisingly light.

My Fens. I've since upgraded the wheels and tires.

I have the Immortal Spirit Carbon with dur a ace 7800 and could not be happier. It has 6600 miles and zero issues in almost 2 1/2 years best thing I can find for the money and rides better than Trek's stuff IMHO.

Not exactly your answer, but I rode the Motobecane Immortal Force for 6 years and 19k miles. It has the same drivetrain basicly (that 6603 and todays Sprint). It is solid. I think that the Sprint is one of the best values out there. Unless you want to go all carbon then the LeChampion CF. Bikesdirect is low frills, WYSIWYG. But if you do even minimal installation then you can be riding a new bike in 30 minutes out of the box. Do check fasteners at arrival and after about 100 mile/1 month.

Thanks for feedback, I am handy in general and can do basic brake and shift adjustments at this point.

Did the bottom bracket or wheel bearings need any work or lube out of the box? I've never done that work. Also not sure which "fasteners" you refer to...


I am also considering last years' Giant TCR composite, which a LBS can get me for $1200 with 105 group, as carbon is supposed to be more comfortable. Much less than the Motobecane Immortal Force, but 105 instead of ultegra. Frames look similar tho.

I bought a Windsor Tourist from BD last year and didn't have to mess with the BB or wheel bearings. I just had to put on the wheels and put the front brakes on; handlebars; pedals; and a few other minor things. Sounds like you have the skills for it.

If you are looking for comfort in a Giant, check out the Defy line. It's more upright and comfortable than the TCR which is more of a racing bike. I also have a Giant Defy Advanced and like it.

I'd go with the Giant. 105 is just as durable as Ultegra, just not as light. The TCR frame is WAY nicer in my opinion, and will keep the typical roadie from desiring bling-upgrade for much longer. (It's also a much more refined/defined geometry.)

Since I was at the LBS and realized I might spend over $1000, I took a look at the BMC competitive cyclist has on sale for $1149. It's the same weight as the giant TCR and the motobecane sprint but AL frame, so I assume the frame is better made than the others.

Any thoughts on low end carbon (giant) vs good AL (BMC) vs generic frame but ultegra (moto sprint)?

I had the bottom bracket replaced one time in that 19,000 miles. Went to a lighter set of wheels (Soul S2.0's) after about 4 years, not because of any problems. My methodology is tires when changed as a set go 2,500 miles change the rear tire. Then at 2,500 more miles change both. I ride IRC Redstorms from Pricepoint (~$18 each). Cassette and chains get changed at 5,000 miles.


Fasteners are bolts (and/or nuts) like brake pads, chain ring bolts, brake mount bolts. and headset/stem bolts. Usually they are good out of the box. Some need minor adjustments so you loosen them and tighten anyways but others are never touched usually. No one cares for your bike like you do.

If you go with BD you will get a bike in a box (about the size of a small mattress). You will probably have to put on the front brake assemby, seatpost, wheels, and pedals. The handlebars may be hanging or loose so they have to be mounted/adjusted. The gears/brakes are all fastened and 90%+ dialed in. Maybe some small barrel adjustment until perfect. Same for saddle position and handlebar position. But in 30 minutes you can ride a new bike and after about 100 miles recheck all and all minor adjustments should be done.

Giant makes a great bike and 105 is a solid work horse group. You can have one of 2 positions either buying now with intent for a future purchase/upgrades. Or buy what is best for your needs for the long haul, maybe a little more $$ intially but save $$ in the long run. Do what it best for you. Be happy and ride it like you want to wear it out.

You're overthinking this. Just get the bike that appeals to you most aesthetically. The small difference in dollars ain't gonna change yer life one way or the other.

I would get the Giant. But I bet you'd be happy with any of them.

I have a Sprint that's a couple of years old now and it has been great. I use it for all kinds of activities, and since I learned to properly shift it (my first road bike), it has been completely bulletproof. It has barely needed a single wrench since the day I had the LBS build it. As a first road bike, I would recommend it without hesitation.

I have a grand sprint, which has some upgraded components from the regular sprint (wheels, crank, brakes, bars, etc) but has ultegra components and the same frame. I love it and think it was worth every penny, but I bought used off craigslist. The frame is Kinesis made 7005 aluminum with high modulus carbon, so it comes out the same factory as a lot of high end brand-name bikes.

I'd say it depends on how confident you are doing the final assembly, fitting, and knowing which size to order. There is a lot of value in having a lbs fit the bike to you and being able to take a test ride. If you are confident in your abilities, then you can move up to a better groupset for the same price. However, if you want to have someone fit the bike to you and might need help with adjustment or assembly, or are not sure about the sizing, it might not be a great deal.
