Ridiculously high speed reading with Edge 500 / Powertap

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ridiculously high speed reading with Edge 500 / Powertap

I've been having a very strange problem for the last few months.

I have 2 Garmin Edge 500s - I've been using them with 3 different bikes:
- Bike 1: Powertap Elite+ wheel, GSC-10 sensor
- Bike 2: Powertap Pro+ wheel, no GSC-10 sensor
- Bike 3: Quarq Powermeter, no GSC-10 sensor

With Bike 3, everything is fine. With both bikes 1 and 2, the Garmin unit shows an impossibly high speed (117-130kph). I have upgraded both units to the most recent firmware, and also re-done the update. No avail.

The units work fine with the Quarq - but with both the Powertap wheels, the speeds are out of whack. Bikes 1 is in one location; bikes 2 & 3 are in a different locations, so it isnt a GPS error either.

The only thing I can think of is that I had sent both Powertap wheels back to Saris for some repairs. Not sure how that could have affected anything.

Any ideas? I've also emailed Garmin, but I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this problem as well.

Strange, to isolate the problem I would try out bike one:
1. Run it with the Edge using no sensors, so only GPS.
2. Run it using only the GSC-10.
3. Run it using only the PT.
4. Run it using both.

IIRC, the garmin pulls speed from satellite data. Whether you are using a Quarq or PT should not matter.

Noob thought: Do the Powertaps have a setting for wheel size that is set wrong ?

It'll pull speed from the PowerTap or the GSC-10 before resorting to GPS. I don't remember the priority between them.

I did find an old thread on another forum from early '11 where the user had this exact problem and a firmware update resolved it. OP, is your firmware up to date?

Check the wheel size setting. Is the problem constant or intermittent? Any relation to actual speed? Check batteries on powertaps and speed sensors.

as has been said, double check to see that the garmins are both set to read the same wheel size and not set to Auto. Check that the sensors are lined up exactly the same. Swap GSC10 sensors and parts to see if you can narrow down what is causing the problem. either something isn't setup the same way or some part is at fault.

Maybe you're under estimating yourself.
