Wide tubular/ sew-up tire in 25c-28c size - recommendations

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wide tubular/ sew-up tire in 25c-28c size - recommendations

I am looking for recommendations on wide tubular tires in a 25c-28c size. What is your favorite? I am a big guy - 225 lbs, so I am looking for something wider that the typical 21c race tire.

I have used a few.

The Challenge Parigi-Roubaix is advertised as 27 mm but is actually a 29. More than half of the ones I have tried were lumpy enough that it could be felt on a smooth road. For the price they're not good enough, IMO.

Dugast makes several in the width range. They mount easily, run straight, and have a great road feel. The sidewalls are not very well coated so occasionally will wear out before the tread. Overall they're worth the cost to me, but just barely.

I prefer the FMB brand for wider tubulars. They are every bit as good as Dugast but without the sidewall issues.

I never have bought them from the same place twice, as far as I am aware. I just Google when I need a set and look for the lowest price.

The Continental Sprinter Gatorskin tubular now comes in 25mm. It is a very tough durable tyre and I have very good experience with it. I am 195lbs and run 22mm front/25mm rear. Also as of this year the Continental Competition tubular also comes in 25mm if you are looking for a more race oriented rubber. I have Schwalbe Ultremo HT in 25mm on my TT disc wheel and the ride is very nice, however, as you can imagine I only use this wheel for a few races in the season.

Anything wider than 25mm might not find your frame, esp modern frames have very tight clearances.

I like Veloflex Roubaix/Arenberg - decent pricing at xxcycle.

I ride the FMB Paris Roubaix in 700x25. They also come in 700x27. I haven't measured, but the 700x27 may be larger than indicated. They didn't fit on a bike that could fit 700x28 Schwalbe clinchers.

I bought mine at World Class Cycles (https://www.worldclasscycles.com).
