Should I throw away my US Postal Service and Livestrong jerseys?

I bought a US Postal Service and Livestrong jersey a little over a year ago when I first took up cycling.

I have mixed feelings about wearing it now. But they are the only jerseys I own, and they are good quality, and I think its wrong to throw away perfectly good items.

But still, I can't help but feel a bit embarrassed and self conscious when I wear it.

What do you guys think?

LowCel 02-20-13 03:42 PM

Why does it matter what anyone here thinks? If you like them, wear them. If you don't, toss them or put them on ebay.

svtmike 02-20-13 03:43 PM

If I had one, I'd still wear it for ironic fun.

Commodus 02-20-13 03:44 PM

Well, if they make you feel embarrassed I'd get rid of them. Riding a bike is supposed to be fun after all.

jon c. 02-20-13 03:45 PM

I'd be embarrassed to wear them.

pdedes 02-20-13 03:45 PM

I've never been a fanboi.

Cyclist01012 02-20-13 03:48 PM

The only "pro" gear i will wear is from disgraced teams. It can be had at great prices.

Right from the first TdF victory in 1999 I would have nothing to do with Armstrong's causes or products. C'mon... it was obvious what was going on.

But now that this legacy is finally and thoroughly discredited, I'm collecting these. It is like art. Once something crosses the line into total bad taste, as the antithesis of truty and beauty, then it is no longer kitsch. It is transformed into art. In 2005, this stuff was kitsch. Now it is art.

Also worth collecting: Parmalat and Enron team kit. Hot stuff.

You might be right. I want a bunch of USPS jerseys now. It'd be kind of cool.

calamarichris 02-20-13 04:26 PM

I think you should take the irony one step further and act like you never heard Armstrong's confession on Orpah.
You can ride around portraying the ultimate Lance fanboi, and when people make fun of you, you can look them dead in the eye and repeat the same lines those clods were chanting for years:
"Never tested positive!"
"Everyone else DID test positive!"
"USADA is incompetent!"
"Lemond/Andreus/Floyd are all crybabies and attention W#0r3$!"
"LIVESTRONG"!"
"Free FLOYD!"

Visit http://www.realultimatepower.net to get into the right frame of mind before every ride. Or better yet, check out the hilarious stalwarts in the Armstrong thread in the ProCycling for the Fans subforum--pretty rich material in there.

I've raced against him, defended him for years to others and now can't stand the guy BUT I do have some Livestrong Stuff I still wear.

THere were members of the team that were clean and nobody of importance is really going to think anything different if you wear them, it's just a kit.

Do tell!

Homebrew01 02-20-13 04:33 PM

I wear my not so good jerseys as base layers in the winter.

Not much to tell, just another dude between me and the finish line. This was prior to him winning his World Championship. I stopped racing (the first of many times) right before Atlanta.

wphamilton 02-20-13 04:39 PM

HB I'd wear it. The only people who will likely know much about it are serious cyclists and they're not likely to care (considering what they're probably wearing).

Leukybear 02-20-13 04:47 PM

You can always wear them inside out and make a cycling fashion statement. Waste not want not.

surgeonstone 02-20-13 04:47 PM

Wear them if they fit and are intact. At the very least they will be good conversation starters.

abstractform20 02-20-13 04:49 PM

if you wont have any support for a team that has a cheater(s) then you probably wont support any team in cycling.

id wear it. to be honest, i never really cared about lance or pro cycling, but ever since i saw the framed jerseys pic, i like him.

Throw them away if you want to, keep them if you prefer. But make up your own mind, don't let a bunch of idiots you've never met do it for you.

Then ride naked. It'll help with your embarrassment.

BoomMcNasty 02-20-13 04:59 PM

All my friends make fun of me for wearing spandex in general. I don't think it would matter much which one it was. I stopped caring what anyone thought long ago. If you don't like them or are that worried about it, ditch em.

Gatorfreak 02-20-13 05:19 PM

Don't wear them...send it all to me! You could even use the US postal service to mail them. I'll gladly wear it.

Orangejuice 02-20-13 05:43 PM

Wear them. They are perfectly good jerseys, and they are much cooler now than they were before considering all of the controversy... Consider them conversation starters.

LesterOfPuppets 02-20-13 05:52 PM

I'd toss 'em.

Never give up the Enron jersey, though!

A lot of people are embarrassed to wear tight lycra-type stuff. After a while, you figure out nobody really cares. Ditto for jerseys from this or that team. I notice jerseys I like. Random jerseys of indifferent design, I pay no attention to.
