New cardio workout tax for Washington state?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New cardio workout tax for Washington state?

Hey guys I figured this belongs here. Maybe next we will have a runners tax, or a "Eating at taco bell tax". We have to stop global warming somehow.

Cyclists pay for roads they use.

That's a private e-mail response from a legislator so you'd be guilty of hyperbole to claim that WA state is proposing a tax on exercising. But I'd love to hear a scientific response to the claim that exercising causes global warming due to the elevated heart rate increasing CO2 emissions.

Since most states are going to--or already are--experiencing a deficit the populations that will be targeted will be minorities (and I'm not talking racial minorities). Cyclists are one of those minorities and in the state of Washington the taxes they are proposing could definitely help with decreased tax revenue. It's easy to pass a tax on cycling than it would be to pass a 0.0005% tax increase for all residents.

Except none of the Washington state legislators are proposing a tax on cyclists.

Wasn't there talk of paying XXX on a bike over $1000 in taxes (not sales)?

It is true that no such tax is proposed, but the email does suggest that the Rep. believes that cyclist should pay a registration fee. If that legislation were to be approved, who would pay such a fee? Recreational riders, probably not. Just those that ride for serious exercise, and die hard hobbyist. I apologize if my thread title was misleading.

However you must agree that this Rep.'s CO2 claim is a joke. Further more icyclist link shows clearly that we do pay our fair share for use of the road. Mr. Orcutt is basically saying that we have to pay to breath!

Yes there was. What they really need is a miles driven tax on cars/etc. The problem is that the gas mileage of the vehicle fleet is increasing.

The talk was to charge a $25 tax on bicycles costing more that $500. This was included in a draft transportation package that also raised taxes for gas and cars.

I'll leave this here as well, http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...74369-Bike-Tax
