The imaginary benefits of modern race equipment

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just ran a Google search... can see where this might have been difficult and the search function on the forum is even worse.

Good times.

No, but that misses the point. The vast majority of riders are not racers and get precious little benefit from modern innovations like superlight CF frames and low spoke count wheels. But that's pretty much all that's offered for mid to high range bikes in the LBS.

Perhaps you're missing the point as the OP also states that the majority of riders are also getting little benefit from clipless pedals, STI shifting and improved tires. That would include very low to low range bikes.

It wasn't me. This is more like me, except my helmet is geekier.

the benefit for non-racing riders is that carbon frames offer a smoother and more enjoyable ride...and a low spoke count does not mean a light wheelset, but there are a lot of 16/20 or 20/24 wheelsets that support people under 250lb very well.

What else would you expect from a mid to high range bike? I'm curious how a bike that isn't light and not have low spoke wheels can move into that price range.

I think this thread is done. OP admits it was mostly trolling to begin with.
