Now I get the Lycra thing!

I sucked it up and bought spandex shorts for cycling. I did 20 miles today and I was sooooo comfortable! It was alot easier to keep my pace. I was getting sore in basketball shorts. I want to get bibs but the shorts were cheaper. I'm a believer now.

Welcome to the dark side.

Attach some clip-on suspenders, loosen the waist drawstring, and you have budget bibs.

Psimet2001 03-09-13 05:36 PM

Yup...turns out there's a reason we all look kinda strange out there. It's just better.

Welcome and congrats! You have a lot of awesome discoveries and times ahead of you. Kinda jealous.

I remember when I started road cycling like a year ago, there were alot of things I didn't understand about the things other roadies did. Now I'm starting to understand alot of it. Lol

Save your cash, get some bibs. Some people swear by shorts, but the majority of cyclists that try bibs stick with bibs. I am but one of that majority.

He's only on the dimly lit side at the moment. But these threads will help find the dark side.

Can someone explain the value of bibs? I've been "back on the bike" since '08 and have pretty much everything you need, and like most of us, I've bought some things I just wanted. Yet, I've always opted for traditional cycling shorts rather than bibs. Is there really a benefit or is it more of a preference thing?

It's a preference thing. I tried several bibs and didn't like any of them. I'm much more comfortable in my shorts.

MinnMan 03-10-13 06:13 PM

I admit that I"ve yet to try bibs and wonder what the advantage could be - I suppose they stay pulled "up" better.

But early on I did go through that sequence of discoveries - from cut-off sweat pants to shorts, from t-shirts to jerseys, from gardening gloves to padded cycling gloves, etc. With each step I became more of a mamil and more of an embarrassment to my teenage daughter, but the gear does what it is supposed to do in a way that the fred uniform does not.

NMBuff 03-10-13 06:27 PM

I ride with a buddy who's partially moons me while riding with his shorts. I've been trying to get him to convert to bibs. They keep the chamois in place better IME.

At least when I ride with him it makes me HTFU and pull
