Orbea make some nice bikes, as do TREK. Maybe you could save a lot of money and buy the TREK 1500, which has Ultegra stuff and Bontrager wheels -- or even look at the Trek 1200 with Shimano 105. The 1500 should be well under $3000 -- the 2003 model is selling down here for about $2300. A mate of mine races 'A' grade on one, and reckons it's "awesome", as he puts it.

Okay badsac, how do you feel about being a bit of a guinea pig? I haven't tried to to the 'order a complete partset from overseas' before - how would you like to be the first?. For a hugely reduced price, you'd get a Custom Tephra ( except I pick the geometry based on the info you give me ), handmade steel forks, full Ultegra 9sp, Ultegra/Open pro wheels, Ritchey WCS stem and post, Deda 215 bars, Flite saddle - everything you need for a complete bike except pedals for......A$4332. That's roughly a grand off retail. *rubs eyes* :eek: Waitaminute....maybe thats a bit cheap......

Nah, I got no problem with being a guineapig per say, besides freaking out about being a bit of a noob about not being able to tell what I might be getting. What's a steel fork like? Seems all the forks I've seen these days are carbon fibre. There must be a reason for that. Are the colours you have on your Tephra page the only colours you can do it in? Cause my bikes going to have to be a rich (almost scarlet) red. :)

Can you tell me a bit about the characteristics of the frame? Will it weigh a ton? Flex like spaghetti?

Well, the first page was funny. Time for me to step in....

Well, for a start, have a look at my bike - its the orange one - http://www.thylacinecycles.com/gallery/album03

Carbon forks are light and cheap. Steel ones weigh about 300g more, but I can tune them to match the frame. Bottom line - I'd rather do a nice steel fork than put a crap carbon fork on a bike, although if you insist on a carbon fork I should be able to get one for a similar price. Crimson is an absolute must! No problems there, one of the stock colours is exactly that - Crimson. Frame will weigh something between 3lbs (1360g) and 4lbs (1820g) depending on size. My frame is a sloping 62cm and weighs about 4lbs. Rides like a dream, but hey, I'm biased. :) Info I'd need? Inseam/height/weight for a start.

If steel is going to give a better result then yeah, that would be the go. I notice you've got a carbon fork on your bike though. ;)

Don't tempt me! Nah I'll have a little think and get back to you. It's one thing to talk sh1t to some grubby salesman when I'm undecided about whether i'll spend the dough. It another to stuff you around when you're making the thing. I'm just a bit worried that I am going beserk, and would be better off just getting something half the price, and sort out a bit more about what I'd require in a bike, rather than pay the dough up front when I might be after something else. But then again, qualities quality, whether you can appreciate it straight away or it takes you a few thousand k's. Fark, I need to stop thinking so much. :p

another aussie here, been off the road, not by choice forced by a car, didnt do any damage to me apart from some skin off, just the bike and its taken a while to get some funds together to fix it (driver chose not to stop) :mad:

So here i am back on the forum first time in nearly a year and ready to rock and roll.

Badsac, the thing about a good road bike is that it's something that you'll always have. It doesn't get outdated as quick a a mountainbike, and a handmade steel frame never goes out of fashion. Anyway, the offer is out there. If you want to take advantage of my generosity, feel free.

Hrm, I'm wondering if I should go for a ride today. Already done 385kms this week and feeling a bit wrecked - especially that trip out to Werribee South. The headwind out there is horrendous. I was sitting on 22kph and my knees were screaming 'Stop! Stop!'

Well i must concur on this, full to overflowing, the redneck capital of Aus.

Ex Sydney lad obviously and i used to ride the pacific highway every day into the city, fast narrow lanes with huge volumes of traffic and didnt feel scared. Riding in Qld with its vast open spaces and qtr the people scares me witless. I dont think the ability to drive and be curteous is a prerequisite to recieving a licence in the Sunshine State.

Where can I get good handle bars for under a 100 bucks?

Back in the early 90s, we used to buy our Cinelli 64/40s for $50, but all of sudden, handle bars are $200!!! :eek: How the hell did that happen?

I know!! I bought a Cinelli XA (or was it 1A??) stem for about $70 in 1990 when the Eubios was the Rolls-Royce h/bar at about $110. Black anodized...mmmm......sexy.
