Was this a mid-shaft clavicle fracture? (Most common as it's the weakest point of the bone and also considered the "best" location if you are going to break one - the impact energy traveled to the weakest spot and snapped. From what I read, less chance of comminution).
I'd wonder that if after 2 (or even 3 breaks), you might have benefited from ORIF, to allow the bone to set as close to optimum as possible. (shorter range for hard callous required to bridge bones)

Just got my disk from the Hospital. This hurt btw
Finished El Tour de Mesa Today literally, but symbolically overcoming the chaos of breaking my clavicle. It was awesome. No pain during the ride; after was definitely a rough time. Thanks again for everyone's input.

I didn't see this thread a week or so ago, but since it was bumped today...
I'm 52, 5'11", 165 lbs. Never broke a bone until the very end of November 2012, when I went down at low speed over a small bump on a suburban side-street. Hands pushed up off the handlebar, wheel torqued in a direction I can't recall, and I was pretty much instantly going down as I was trying to reach for the handlebars. Learned later (after my first-ever ambulance ride) that it was a classic mid-shaft break of the left clavicle.
Obligatory remark ==> The Bike Was Fine.
Engineers like me always look for precise black-and-white answers, but I guess that's not how it works in medicine. Couldn't ever get a straight answer about how long it would be before I could start running or biking again even though I made it clear that was a big priority for me. Maybe they didn't want to face my tears and/or anger if they told the truth.
I was in a simple sling (not a figure-of-eight brace) for four to six weeks, although I took it off before getting permission from the doc. I tried a stationary bike (not my road bike on trainer) a few times but hated it, even though it's sitting right there in our gym at work. Started running short distances (2-3 miles) at about 5 weeks, again against doctor's orders.
Basically there wasn't much sign of bones fusing at my 3 week, 6 week, or even 12 week followup visits. At 12 weeks the orthopedic surgeon basically said I was clear to do anything I'd normally do - "The Trial of Life" I believe he called it. I was of course concerned the bones hadn't fused but he simply said I wasn't a ten-year-old. *sigh*
I only take solace in that I've got a doctor who makes more money for performing surgery but who doesn't think it's necessary. I'm running 4 to 6 miles two times a week, cycling three to four times a week, and was very comfortable this morning an 40-mile group ride here in Austin. Just have sharp pain when I'm standing too long at a grocery store or walking the dog, and it seems to be getting better with time.
Can't finish without my clavicle snapshot. Co-pay for the ambulance ride and E.R. visit was high enough I should get some use out of it
