Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - April 6/7
On this side of the earth, the leaves are starting to turn the brilliant colours of autumn, and the temperature has dropped to about the mid-20s. What's it like on your part of the earth? Is the weather conducive to cycling outside? Or are you still working up a sweat in your indoor dungeon? Are you cycling or are you involved in other sports? Tell us what you're up to this weekend ... got pics?
Friday - 1.6 km walk and 12.81 km mixed terrain bicycle ride (gravel and paved, flat and hills)
Saturday (so far) - somewhere between 1 and 2 hours in the canoe on the local lake. And it was a lot warmer out there than I had anticipated!! It reached 26C today ... in early April!

Saturday - so today ... we went canoeing on the lake, did a little bird watching, ate a new type of ice cream (a little underwhelmed), browed a second-hand shop, and then went for a 26 km bicycle ride out and back on one of our favourite local routes ... and then unpacked several more boxes. We're starting to settle in.
The place where we live now is halfway up a hill ... great for the beginning of our rides ... a challenge for the end of our rides. I'm hoping that I'll get used to the climb soon.
A link to the photos of today's canoeing adventure ... the scenery, and especially the birds ...

I rode el Tour de Mesa this morning:
https://app.strava.com/activities/47517662
official time was 3:15:15
Unfortunately (well I guess I've gotten better
) I didn't stop at all along the route, so no pictures
I've only been riding regularly for just over a year. I guess it was Jan or Feb 2012 when I found out about the Chandler (metric) Century Ride in March 2012 and I decided I wanted to do it. Since el Tour de Mesa was just a few weeks--and a few miles more--I figured what the heck?
It was only after I registered that I looked at the elevation chart, and my stomach nearly fell.
I was much more prepared for it this time around. After struggling up Usery Pass last year, I went out and rode it 16 more times over the past year. No, I'm not a pro, and never will be, but for a 3x/week guy, I'm happy with this time. Yea, it would be cool to get that time down to around 3 hours. but there's always next year

Sunday - It's 3 pm on Sunday 7 April, here, just north of Melbourne (and a few other places too, of course). Rowan and I just got in from a really nice and not too strenuous 52.33 km ride. It's 21C, with light to moderate winds, and a bit of smoke haze from the planned burns.

Anyone else get a ride in this weekend?
Or maybe go for a canoe? Go swimming? Go skiing?

Saturday, April 6: Sometimes it is good to get away from the familiar and do the Robert Frost thing and venture into that less traveled road. Today a group of friends and I did just that. For our efforts we were rewarded with a beautiful ride into the Solvang countryside. The views were stunning, the hills were challenging but not killer and even though we faced steady and persistent headwinds we all had a fantastic time. Great riding in a beautiful area with awesome friends--life does not get much better than this. Oh yes...pizza and beer tonight. Yep...like I said, life does not get much better than this.
Sunday, April 7: The road less traveled, Part Deux. Today my friends and I ventured back into the hills above Los Olivos. We rode to the gates of Michael Jackson's former Neverland Ranch where we did the tourist-thing and took pictures. Before getting tot he ranch we came across a long-horn bull grazing next to a couple of bison. And yes, I did a Tombay and scraped my right knee...OUCH. After the stop at MJ's former ranch we headed to Los Olivos for a coffee break before returning to Buellton, via Solvang. This was Part Two of a weekend of good riding with fantastic friends in a bucolic setting. Life is indeed good!

Drove about an hour inland, to our local mountains, and pedaled about 6,000 feet.
Then on the way home stopped at local brewery.

Well if Machka can start on "friday" then i'll start thurs
thurs: 25mi solo with a bit of a breeze that I wasn't really expecting. ride has one steep hill that is like .5mi of 8-10% that is always an early season test. no Longhorns but I did go past some goats.. does that count?
Sun: super windy so no riding. woke up and watched Paris-Roubaix.
tomorrow (mon) i have a 25 or 35mi ride planned with a friend. weather is going to kick ass.. 65F and sunny.

Rode in El Tour de Mesa with my friends Guy and Isaac. Awesome day... dispite the broken clavicle

ARRRHHH... This do be my clavicle surgery scar, proof it do be there; three weeks old to boot.

About 30 minutes after we finished I was shaking in the car in pain, but it was worth it. I just went home and took some Ibuprofen and took a VERY long nap.

This morning: https://tpks.ws/40Xj
Pictures from the Capitol 10,000 will be coming whenever MarathonFoto gets them up. I was wrecked for some of them; I had trouble staying vertical to walk out of the finishing chute.
This afternoon: https://tpks.ws/1BuE
The gap in the ride was from coming across and man and his small son; the father had broken his chain and didn't have a chain tool. I did, so I stopped to help. He had also done the Capitol 10,000 this morning, and faster than I had.

We finally had a bunch if days suitable for riding. Worked then rode then worked again on Friday, 15 mile loop. Saturday went for a longer ride while working a split day then flatted 10 miles out (too bad was feeling pretty good), didn't have my kit so made the call of shame. When I got back I took out a coworkers new Trek Superfly 100 Pro (beautifully light carbon dual suspension) mountain bike out for a quick 5 mile spin on a muddy route nearby which was pretty fun. Today on Sunday goofed around with the wife and kid, played 9 holes of golf together, watched Paris Roubaix had a nice "rum and junk" drink and then decided to go out for a 27 mile ride. First day of the season able to ride in shorts and a jersey, turned into an incredible late day ride!

Last month was really terrible for bike riding. A combination of weird weather, family commitments, poor health and a kitchen remodel kept me off the bike for almost the entire month. I’m still getting over a cold that moved into my chest. However, I was determined to at least get one ride in this weekend. So I went out on Saturday. Although, my chest and sinus still hurt I got my ride in. It was really beautiful weather and I was reminded how much I missed cycling. The only downside was I got passed by a dude on an ancient mountain bike. I’m really out of shape.

Yesterday we did Cross Florida on the Tandem. 168 miles from Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic to Bayport Park on the Gulf. Nice tailwind to start.
We flatted at 46 miles, and lost the fast group we were with. Did a lot solo, or pulling slower riders the next 122miles. Got off course and had to cyclocross back on lifting the bike over railroad tracks at one point to avoid backtracking and adding 5 miles or so.
Wind shifted to the west as we got closer to the Coast. The 40 miles or so around Dade City, San Antonio, are surprisingly hilly for Florida.
ended up with 8:30 ride time, and average of 19.8 mph. All in all a very good day.

I also rode the Tour de Mesa and despite a minor pile up I was able to better my time from last year by 40 minutes (the lack of horrendous winds this year helped) and completed it under 3hrs (2.52.01.48).
It was a great race, learned a lot and had a blast pulling with 3 other guys to bridge back to the lead group.

I opened the garage door on Saturday morning and it was colder and windier than expected. I ran back inside to grab my windbreaker and set off on a nice 55-mile ride with a local group.
Sunday was a tad warmer, but still windy and cool. I met up with another group for a 42-mile ride before heading here with a group from a car forum: https://simeonemuseum.org/
The temperature is rising fast here in NJ. It's supposed to be in the 70s today, and 84F on Wednesday, but dropping to the 50s again over the weekend. It's going to be one of those weeks where it's hard to figure out what to wear on a ride, but it's looking like shorts for the next few days.

I am pretty jealous... I had no ride until Sunday, and when i got on my bike I realized the temp was down to around 7C (~44F) and falling, as was the sun ugh... So i rode the fastest 10km i could in a race against the sun, and the temp. Made it back home and was a bit numb due to the last half being into a head wind off the river lol
I wish summer or at least spring would get here!

Did a 600k brevet over the weekend. Rough ride. First day is hilly, but we've done the hills before. Then the second day, we had a strong headwind coming back in, so the last 100k or so was pretty rough.

Participated in the Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay over the weekend. Racked up 265Km on Saturday and did a team roll of 90Km on Sunday to make it 355Km all up. Was a fantastic weekend for cycling here in Victoria and there were around 1000 participants in the two-day event.

A trip along the coast of edinburgh/north berwick, visiting a friend. Covered 80+ over the weekend riding a Trek Madone 5.2 rental bike...

It was COLD and wet on the last leg towards berwick, and I was absolutely covered in manure
from my friends back wheel, but after a MASSIVE coffee and sandwich the weather improved and we headed back to edinburgh with a nice tail wind.
