Anyone in Dallas know Dave Cheakas at Soutwest Frameworks?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone in Dallas know Dave Cheakas at Southwest Frameworks?

I have a frame at Southwest Frameworks in Dallas being repainted. It should be about ready now, but Dave Cheakas has stopped responding to my emails and phone messages. I was communicating with him routinely, but about three weeks ago I sent some modified instructions and got no reply. Since then he hasn't responded to more emails and phone messages. I am concerned something might have happened to the business and live too far away in Houston to easily check up on it. Does anyone know anything about it? Does anyone drive or ride by his place at 8634 Wingate Drive 75209. It is just across Lemmon Avenue from Love Field. His shop is behind the house. If anyone can let me know anything about it, I would appreciate it. [Anyone who might be near there and wouldn't mind dropping in to see what is going on, please PM me for personal/bike details to make any inquiry easier.]
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Robert

Shows what you know! Frame builders, repainters, wheel builders can do no wrong. It is one of the unwritten rules of the transaction. But I'll be sure to show the frame around here so you will have a chance to offer something more than a critique of other's posts. You know, something substantial, maybe even pedantic. Wouldn't that be refreshing.

Post this in the regional forum. Texas is active enough for you to get a response. Hope it turns out ok.

I want to acknowledge that some folks have contacted me through private messages with offers to help contact Southwest Frameworks and thank the folks who have offered assistance. I appreciate it.

Thanks. I've got something working right now. I will see how that turns out, but go back to the regional forum if I still am having a problem. I appreciate the tip.

PM Cuda2K, he has a relationship with Cheekas. I have been to the SW Shop and Dave is a very nice guy. Saw him earlier in the year at a vintage bike show.

Thanks, that is very helpful. Yes, I agree with what you say about Dave. I drove up from Houston and delivered the frame myself to Dave and we had a nice visit. I was very impressed with him personally and his work. That is why I was worried something was wrong when I stopped hearing from him. As I said above, I have something working right now through another contact resulting from my post. Let's see how it turns out. I will follow your advice if anything further is needed. Thanks again.

Okay! Heard from the frame builder today and work is in progress. Maybe another couple of weeks for the frame modifications (remove pump peg, substitute down tube cable guides for the shifter bosses) and painting I ordered. I'm antsy, but can wait it out. I'm just glad they got back to me to give me a heads up.

Right on. Was there an explanation for the communication breakdown?

Not really. Someone I found on the 41 who carried a message for me said that Dave was having trouble with his phone service. I think their MO is to just make contact when you get to the front of the line and the work is starting. Then they let you know what sort of timing to expect. All good as far as I am concerned now that I know I am "in work".

We will expect before and afters. I have been considering a new coat of paint on a build I neglect because of the frame color. Petty, but true. Your pics might just get me to take that step.

Saw this from years ago and had to respond. David mentioned phone problems when I first contacted him in 2020. Still at it apparently. Here are some other excuses from his emails:

"We've been having computer troubles again so I'm just now seeing this."

"Sorry for the late replay. We had to replace the harddrive on the
computer again..."

"Our email crashed last week when our guy was trying to upload some new

website stuff."

He's full of it. I finally just asked for my frame back in whatever condition it may be in and still could hardly get anything from him. Yesterday sent him an invoice for the frame and said I was going to file a claim if unpaid. I'll send it elsewhere to be finished if I ever get it back. Beware sending anything to him. It's a black hole.
