Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My budget was less than yours and I got a set of custom wheels. I'm not a racer by any means and was just looking for a better set of wheels that I could ride in rough roads. I ride for leisure, fun and fitness, not for speed. I basically told the builder my weight, what I wanted to use the wheels for and my budget and I got a beautiful set of custom wheels. I brought them to the shop and all the pros and mechanics ooo''s and ahhhh'd and made a big fuss about them. I highly recommend custom with your budget.

This is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.

Contact Rob at Psimet LINK and provide the same information and tell him your pricepoint. I'll bet he could get you into a nice Kinlin build.

Good luck!

I seemed to do OK with Alex rims, the stock ACE-19 that came with my Tricross did me OK. I broke one spoke (which I think was because I'd locked the bike on a slight slope and ended up with one spoke supporting the weight of the bike against the lock), and then cracked the rim after hitting a pothole at 35mph. Until I cracked the rim they had done me just fine for 5000-odd miles and I'm not exactly a featherweight rider.

I bought the bike used so don't know how many miles the previous owner put on them.

I think we're all looking for improvements when swapping out parts but I don't believe wheels are going to make me a "faster" rider. I do think a more solid or better quality wheel will help me get the existing power transferred to the ground a little bit better but I certainly don't expect a new set of wheels, or any other modification for that matter, to make me Lance.

I did send the guys at Psimet an email. Hopefully I'll hear back from them soon.

I've heard Boyd's mentioned a few times. I guess it doesn't hurt to check them out as well.

I got my wheels from psimet. He does take a while to answer emails (though I got a response right away just took him some time to get back to me on some follow up questions). The wheels he built me are amazing and I'm very happy with the results. Good Luck!

I don't think that wheels can cause this, or that a more aero wheel can correct it. Just a word of caution.

I've ridden her bike in windy conditions and while there's still some fighting with the wind, it's not nearly as bad as with my bike. I guess I'm just not sure what else it could be aside from the wheels. While I don't doubt there's going to be some issues with the wind regardless of what I get, there has to be something out there that's a vast improvement over the wheels I currently have...

What about RS80 C24s. That's what I ended up getting. My budget was much bigger but I couldn't really justify it given my usage - primarily fitness and fun. No racing, no immediate plans to. No rider weight limit, light-ish at 15xx grams, aluminum brake track, and a touch over $500 on CRC.

I'm game to look at anything that's going to be noticeable difference, I'm not brand-specific. I don't need something great as I'm far more into MTBing than road cycling anyway...

I doubt that there will be anything resulting in a vast improvement with respect to wind resistance, but don't let my opinion stop you from weighing the alternatives I'm just trying to help you keep the possibilities in perspective.

I weigh about the same and was looking for the same thing and went with boyd wheels and do not regret it one bit. A few other companies mentioned....wont name any names took weeks to get back to me with questions. My vitesse wheels have held up great and boyd's customer service is second to none

Hey, I appreciate it. I'm just looking for a few nice advantages to make the job a little easier.

Do a couple searches on here and around the internetz. You'll find there's a big following for the RS80-c24. Apparently they're great wheels. I actually just picked up a pair and am waiting on them. I got them shipped to Canada for 425 from Wiggle. Used 12-Extra for an extra 12% off.

They use the same rim as the Dura Ace version and basically an Ultegra hub. The added weight is in the hub which is where it matters least wheel-wise. Very much looking forward to spinning them up.

Cool! Let me know how they work for you when you get them. I'm not in any huge hurry to buy as I've been doing a lot of trail riding on the MTB.

Yes, they were definitely all on my list to check; doesn't have to be Mavic. On some of the wheels I've read mixed reviews on various sites but who knows what to believe. For everyone who says a particular wheel flexes and sucks, another one raves about how great it is. I'm gathering there are probably two parties reviewing these; those who "think" they're "pro" and those who just bought their first upgrade at Performance Bike at the urging from the sales staff.

I ride these as well, great wheels.

Though I would not recommend them over a nice set of handbuilds from someone like Psimet.

Absolutely, yes. Take your budget to $650 or so and snag a sale and you will totally transform your ride.
