Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Though our conversations show me that you usually see things differently than I do. You can score oakleys for under $100 on ebay though.
I would never buy a pair of Radarlocks for less than $100 off eBay. That price screams counterfeit.

I didn't say radar locks. I said radars. Since the locks have come out you can get the regular radars for cheaper. But yes one should be aware of the counterfeits out there.

I'd recommend M Frames over Radars. They cost less than Radars, and work just as well.

I think it would come down to aesthetics and personal opinion between the 2. the M frames look to 1980 to me and I prefer the radar.

There are plenty of safety glasses out there, many with UV A and B protection. Most business that use safety glasses, require UV A and B protection as part of their spec. MANY, MANY can be had for way less than $10 a pair. I used to buy them by the case.

that's strange when you consider that they weren't released until 1990.

$100 is considered reasonable for sunglasses??? My clear goggles are 3M safety glasses that were like $5. My next sunglasses will be safety glasses from Home Depot also. I agree with the poster that said the expensive stuff breaks or gets lost, and the cheap stuff you can't seem to get rid of.

Maybe if you are careless with your stuff. I have had my Oakley's for 3 years and they look brand new. Take them out of the hard case before a ride and clean them and put them back to store in hard case when not in use.

Damned straight. I'm lucky if I can even find my sunglasses when it's time to ride. Half the time I have to dig them out from under the seat.

favorite glasses I use for riding are cheapo Winchester shooting glasses. Something like $10 bucks. Love the high intensity yellow lenses for those overcast days and early morning/evening rides. I've got another pair with smoke lenses for those sunny days

I'm going to check out Tifosi, but I have to say (or yell) I MISS MY OAKLEYS. My Flak Jacket (prescription which made it even worse), were stolen due to my own stupidity back in December. They had lasted for over 4 years and were fantastic quality. I purchased a set of Rudy Project Noyz, cheaper than oakley by a bit but not much. The quality and comfort have been decent but not as good as the Oakley's, I will also say that the blue lenses stain like crazy with either sweat or a little salt water spray. It ate away at the coating and they look like crap now. Maybe this would be covered by warranty I haven't checked, but I didn't have that problem on the iridium coating of my oakley's.

I know Pcad has several of these

in various tints, with designer straps and whatnot (and they look marvelous on you, too, Pcad).

I have a nice pair of Scotts with interchangeable lenses and a pair of Tifosis, but I had trouble with contact lenses peeling off my eyes at higher speeds, and the Scotts and Tifosis didn't help much. Turns out it's more about the shape of your head and of the glasses, so I finally settled on a pair of $7.99 shop glasses from Lowe's, too. Definitely not the ticket if you're worried about the fashion police, although they're not embarassing by any means*. Contacts stay on the eyes but there's still enough ventilation so they don't fog up on cold days. They're also frameless, so there's nothing to look over/under when you're in the drops, which was another reason I bought a few pairs, back when I was racing.

It makes it easier on the wallet to try a few pairs of these things than to go through the Oakleys and Tifosis and such. And they're all UV rated, so no worries there.

*to me, anyway. ymmv

At my local Performance over the weekend, I picked up two pairs of $50 Optic Nerve's for $5 each. We'll see how they do. They'll be fine to leave in the car or lose on a trip if nothing else. Looked like they were no longer going to carry the brand, so that might be a PSA if you live close to a store.

I was actually just looking at Radar XL in a bike store on Friday, they looked pretty good and they fit me as well as my current glasses (I have a wider than average nose bridge, most sunglasses don't sit right.)

But still, we're talking $100 for the glasses with dark lenses + $60 ish for clear lenses, that's $160. You can get Tifosis with interchangeable lenses and three sets of lenses or with one pair of photochromic lenses for $70 retail.

I'm with Bianchi in the "If it ain't Oakley, it ain't on my face" camp. I've had several different sets from Frogskins to e-wires to M-Frames and my current custom Radars. My eyes are priceless and deserve quality protection.

For me its about how it fit my face. Got two pairs of Jawbones (one pair Transitions). Have them for two years now. I wear them on and off the bike.

If it don't fit my face...then it don't matter how cheap it is. It's still a waste of money.

I agree. Before I started working for Oakley, I wouldn't buy anything other than Rudy Project or Oakley, but now the choice is a no-brainer. Both companies make great eyewear, and their quality level is far superior to anything else in the performance eyewear category.

I have a pair of M Frames that I bought 20 years ago, and other than a few scratches, they are as good as new.

If you are a loser(one that loses things) buy cheap sunglasses. If you hold onto your equipment for years, it's worth paying a little more for the good stuff.

Oakleys are good but totally not worth it to me. I ride pretty hard and I sweat like a hog, even in cold weather. One climb, and I've got at least one, if not many drops of sweat falling onto my lenses. Once that sweat bead is on, those $250 Oakley optics are pointless - it's no better than a $5 pair of glasses. If you don't sweat on your glasses (if I don't go hard like commuting easy, this does happen), Oakleys and their optics could be worth it, but if you're like me and are often getting sweat onto the lenses, it's a waste of money.

I got a head cap (not a cap with a bill on it) and that collects all the sweat. like you, I sweat like a hog but this has solved the issue for not dripping sweat into my eyes or on my glasses.
picked one of these up for $15 and it has been a life saver. no more sweat in the eyes!

I know I'm just an Oakley shill, but have tried the hydrophobic lens cleaner? It works well on even the cheapest crap out there at preventing sweaty lenses.
