is this 2012 cervelo r3 for $1400 worth it?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

48cm 2012 Cervelo R3. Owner says less than 1000km. It's either this or a new Caad10. I'm 5' 7", and not sure what my right size is as I've never bought a new bike, but I've been riding a 48cm for the past 2 years or so. I tried standing over the top tube of a 54cm bike before and it was up to my crotch, if that indicates anything... I think personally I would fit a 51cm better, but this seems like a good deal.

Full Ultegra, I think.

Thanks,

It is a very good deal, but I think you are right that a 51 is more your size. I wouldn't buy this if it is a 48.

Woops. Forgot to include the size, but yes it's a 48cm. I don't know, is a slightly smaller bike bad? I know it's hard to make a big bike fit like a smaller one, but I think a 48cm would work because I have T-rex like arms. And I can always just raise the seat giving me a more aggressive position.

Can you ride it? Bikes are not all sized the same in my experience. One manufacturer's 48 is another's 50. Plus stand over height is only one aspect of fit. There is a lot more to it than that. You really should ride a bike before you buy. It's not a good deal if it is not comfortable to ride.

I'm also 5'7 and normally ride a 53. But looking at there geometry chart the 54 actually has a wheel base slightly (2mm) shorter than the 51. Longer reach, same rear, change in fork rake. I would take it for test ride and see how it feels. It may work for you. You may just need to change the stem.

This might be a stupid question, but how do I test ride a bike if it has different pedals? They look like crankbrother pedals.. not sure, but never used them before. I guess I can ask for his shoes. The worst that can happen is his shoes doesn't fit or I fall with the bike...

Pedals come off easily if they were put on properly (with greased threads) and you put yours on. 15 mm wrench is universal as far as I know. You do have pedals of your own?

After further comparing there geometry chart with that of a couple of my bikes the 54 is the one I would order. Definitely take it for a spin.

Don't judge the 48cm Cervelo too small so quickly. See if you can ride it. May need a longer stem to fit you, but I "think" there's a fair chance it fits you fine.

Someone in Canada is selling an R3 for less than $1500? I'd take it in a heart beat. Make sure it isn't stolen.

A longer stem and a seat post with a set back and you're good to go. You're just probably one size lower than your correct one.

That bike is awesome. I'd pick it up if it fit me.

I am about 5'7", and ride a 49 cm Raleigh, so 48 cm is not out of the question. It really comes down to being close enough to test ride. If you don't have a pedal wrench, buy one. It's worth having and they aren't that expensive. Swap pedals and see how it fits. If it feels close, you can probably make a few adjustments that have already been mentioned. If it seems outrageously small, then pass. As I said already, if it doesn't fit, it's not a good deal.

Thanks guys. I think I'll check it out. Not sure about swapping pedals, but I'll ask. Worse comes to worst, I'll just ask him to hold onto the bike while I pedal backwards; it'll probably be awkward, lol. I'm not sure how to check if it's stolen, but I don't think it's priced 'too' hot. You can get a new 2012 Rival R3 for $2000 at my LBS (probably less if you know someone), but unfortunately they only have 56cm+. But this ad has been up for over a month now (with the last edit being yesterday), so I am skeptical.

I just re-read your post, my mistake I thought you where looking at a 54 not a 48. The 48 is definitely too small it's there XS your there Med/Small. Your better off on a lesser bike with proper fitting. Go to a good shop and get fitted. Or knowing allot of shops around here check out a few shops and see what size you should be on.
