Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bag of beef jerky, fits in pocket nicely, easy to eat and no mess. Beef jerky is great for protein and salt.

Peanut butter and ham sandwiches. Gotta add bacon, that just sounds delicious with a nip of red.. I'll puke if I ever eat another energy bar.

Home made Panforte (you don't need the powdered sugar on top). My wife uses small springform pans with mixed fruit, nuts, a little chili powder and chocolate.

I've got a recipe for samosas that uses phyllo and is baked that I've been meaning to try. It's from a "Cooking Light" cookbook we got from Costco.
Great...now I"m hungry.

My wife is from where samosas come from, and they have become a regular staple of this honkey's diet... but never before or during rides. NEVER.

Best meal on a long ride?

Fried clams, French fries, and two Heinekens on City Island (the Bronx) for lunch on an 80 mile ride with the 5BBC guys a few years ago.

i liked it, and had great ride. Can't say the same for the poor folks downwind....

Ever heard of Uncrustables? Peanut butter and jelly (and other combinations) sandwiches where the two slices of bread have been sealed together with the crusts trimmed off. I freeze them and then throw a couple in a bag if the ride is going to be longer than about 50 miles or so. For an all day ride or for touring, a couple of Uncrustables and a bag of chips with a bottle of Gatorade in a handlebar bag and you're good to go.

This chap I get mine from www.ollofoods.com is into all this healthy food etc and we both agree baked samosas are less likely to upset your stomach

Haven't done it yet, but after reading this thread, I'm thinking that spam musubi may be good to take on a ride.

Allright, that was my second guess. I lived in Hawaii for ten years. In Rochester, needless to say, no one has any clue what a "musubi" is.

I find it unusual that after reading some threads on here that peanut butter bothers some riders' stomachs while riding. I don't understand that. I have a very sensitive digestive system but peanut butter never seemed to be on the list of things I shouldn't eat.

I take a clif bar and got some skratch lab powder to try out, but it's a little gritty for my taste. I'll have to try something else. Clif bars have 250 calories and are easy to cary (compact, won't melt, etc).

I desparately want to surprise my group on a post-Thanksgiving ride by taking a giant turkey leg out of my pocket mid ride and just gnaw the hell out of it for a few miles, Medieval Times-style.
