;)

I know it's only a few ounces - but those extra ounces over (say) a century adds up.

Plus - your cleats are still exposed.

I would be willing to wager a small sum that you can't even tell the difference between having them and not having them despite your multiple responses to no one in particular about how much weight they add. Complaining about the weight seems silly for the protection it adds(I'd rather not have to drill out the screws when it is time to replace the cleats, or worry about losing screws during a ride if one or more happens to back out) and the traction it adds when you have to walk on slick surfaces.

The only part that is exposed is the engagement mechanism, which unless you deliberately walk through mud/tree bark/etc is just fine for most walking surfaces.

I had them and thought they were fine except....

Most of my riding is in really rural areas where the soil is sand based - there is sand on spots on the edge of the road and even on the shoulder in places. It's a high grit kind of sand, not a fine Caribbean beach type of sand. Far too often, if I stopped, I would get a big piece of grit lodged in the part of the cleat that engages the pedal. No way to clip in unless you take the shoe off and dig the piece out. I'm diligent about wearing cleat covers but these things were just a problem.

Because of this, they came off the bike and the Looks went back on.

To the OP - you can get 9 degrees of float out of the Look Keos with the red cleats.

J.

I just throw a pair of coffee-covers into my pocket on longer rides, and do without on shorter, faster rides.

$10 at Performance :

$7 in the actual store.

I just bought 2 pairs last week.

You obviously haven't tried Look Keo 2 Max pedals.

If you're THAT much of a weight weenie, cut off your toes.

+1 on too tight not letting you clip in. Loosen a little and oil, problem solved. Thread locker once you hit the sweet spot and no more issues. I like the speedplays.

I went from Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL to Speedplay Stainless Zero's cause a couple of friends got into the Speedplay cult. I had them for a couple months and couldn't wait to get back into a set of SPD-SL. The guys that talked me into the Speedplays never had used the SPD-SL's as I got back into them they tried a set out and found out their pretty good and got rid of their Speedplays too. They started out with Speedplays following the hype of the Speedplay cult and never tried the SPD-SL. Had another guy that rode with us as he had Zeros and at one time his Speedplays slipped and had a pretty nice scratch on his crank-arm. As soon as that happen he got rid of the Speedplays and got a set of SPD-SL. He said getting in and out of the SPD-SL is just as easy if not better. He said he wouldn't have a scratch like that if he had the nylon cleats to start with! So not everyone's on to the cult here.

yes, its well known that talentless hacks and ridiculous noobs are not good enough to be loved by speedplay.

deep_sky 04-29-13 12:44 AM

Road SPD-SL's before I went to speedplay because I could not get the cleat far enough back with the SPD-SL's. Apart from that I like that even if you aren't fully clipped in with the speedplays, you can pedal and even stand briefly before you fully clip in if you are in a rush to get across an intersection before the light turns red again and you didn't get clipped in right off the bat. I like the keepon kovers which allows me to protect my cleat and keep it until the cleat retention mechanism wears out and never have to remove until the cover wears out.

Both systems have their appeal. To be honest if I had never needed to move my cleats so far back, I'd still be on the SPD-SL's, but even if I could go back to a normal cleat placement, I would stay with the speedplays.

antmeeks 04-29-13 05:47 AM

I'll say this... The majority of people I see in SPDs, Looks, etc. are staring at their feet at starts.

With the Sppedplays, I've never had to look at my feet once. EVEN when I was first learning how to ride them.

thump55 04-29-13 06:38 AM

Speedplay Zeros make my nips hard.

jdon 04-29-13 07:06 AM

You guys all know there is no winner to these Speedplay/Keo/SPD wars right? Ride what you like and stop pushing it on everyone else. Sound like a bunch of Jehovah's.

I really doubt that. It only takes a couple rides to clip in by feel on SLs. Once you get the motion down it's probably faster than speedplays. Drag foot over top of pedal stroke, step down. That's it.

Adrianinkc 04-29-13 03:06 PM

I was riding speedplays till recently the pedal can't seem to hold grease in, it leaks every single ride. I guess it needs a rebuild maybe ? I bought a set of spd sl's and haven't bothered to mess with the speedplays.

of course there is no winner, because there is no contest. Speedplays transcend pedals.

the quote "Its not about the bike" is actually an allusion to it being about speedplays. "It" refers to the universe/multiverse.

I can see that. I ride Zeros, they're good pedals, but having to screw a separate baseplate into my shoes, which seems to loosen up more easily than Look-style cleats, the way the cleats get jammed up if you so much as look at sand or dirt, these things irritate me. I may have to give Keo or SPD-SL a try at some point.

All pedals havetheir strengths and personal preferences. I have been using the Shimano SPD-SL as Ilike the fact that they are pretty much flawless and maintenance free.Like everything else once you get use to it, it's as easy as anything else.

Zeros are good, but the cleats were starting to cause some discomfort, haven't had that issues with my spd-sl's.

With Speedplay Light Actions I can just slap my foot down on the pedal in the middle of a crank rotation and be clipped in. Which is nice when you're pulling away from a stoplight with a bunch of cars qued up behind you. Whenever I see someone with SPD-SL's they always seem to take longer to get clipped in.
