Lube!!! for chains

light/heavy.brands.pros.cons etc etc

hit me with your vast knowledge?

I'm after a lube which wont attract a huge amount of cack for my weekend/sunny side ride and simples to clean off....not fussy about reapplying.

cheers.

I like to use heavier thicker lubes....they are quieter and last longer than thin lubes. Wipe the chain down good and it won't gunk up your chain.

Dumond-tech and Chain-L are some of my favorites, but it doesn't really matter. The Chain-L stuff is really good, but you need to be meticulous when applying it or you will end up giving your bike an oil bath.
The Dumond-Tech stuff is a little harder to **** up, but it doesn't last as long.

^ mostly this.

I use white lightning clean ride-wax based, for my road bike,

and I use the finish line wet lube for my mtb.

Wax lube if dry, currently using some old Pedros Ice Wax, will be going to Finishline Ceramic Wax when this has run out.

Wanderer 04-23-13 03:14 PM

Chain L, unless you want to concoct your own..................

clydeosaur 04-23-13 03:20 PM

I used wax based for a while & gave up. Lately, I've been using Pro-Link. Thin, but stays clean and lubes much better than waxes.

I switched from Chain-L to Squirt.

CrankAndYank 04-23-13 04:06 PM

This is a novel question. I don't think it has ever been asked on a cycling forum before.

Pilky 04-23-13 04:09 PM

ProLink here. Stays clean and seems to work well.

texbiker 04-23-13 05:16 PM

I use paraffin wax. No muss no fuss. No greasy hands.

I go to the store and buy some chain lube. What kind doesn't really make much difference in the grand scheme of things. Read enough threads here and you'll see people cleaning the chain after every ride, applying lube with an eyedropper to each link both sides, and removing the chain to soak it clean after every hundred miles. Or two hundred or five hundred etc. And measuring the chain stretch with varying degrees of obsession. My own advice: don't listen to them. Take 10 seconds now and then to wipe the chain with a rag, dowse it first with lube if you want. Chain lube is not expensive.

I've been using various dry lubes like Pedros and Finish line for years without issue. Light application and wipe off. I usually reapply every 300-400 KM in dry conditions.

Good advise.

When I started using parrafin wax I had a huge gain in average speed. I was able to drop all uninvited wheel suckers with ease. All I need is a carbon frame and I will be in the pro peloton in no time.

Jandro 04-23-13 06:15 PM

WD40Bike lubes. Wet and Dry variants.

/thread

edit: just get the whole WD40Bike product line. You'll thank me later.

white lightning is the most overrated crap ever. total crap.

halfspeed 04-23-13 06:50 PM

I'll let you in on a secret. They all pretty much suck. HOWEVER, what you're supposed to do is pick one, then defend it on forums as the one magical elixer that solves all chain problems. Anyone who has chosen a different lube is a philistine at best and an utter imbecile at worst.

BoSoxYacht 04-23-13 07:00 PM

Purple extreme is very nice, but lately I've been using Finish Line Ceramic because I get it free.

Both work well, but free is a great price.

+1.

Garbage lube.

coasting 04-23-13 07:06 PM

I love my homebrew. Cleanest longest lasting ever.

Vlaam4ever 04-23-13 07:18 PM

GERRY HULL will be back like the phoenix rising over Atlanta. please post a video about chain lube.

I've been riding all around Atlanta looking for a guy on a Cervelo with a 1x10 to shake his hand. I saw a guy on an S3 and a goofy saddle today. I rode like bat out of hell to catch him. It was just an other tri guy with a cool bike and goofy saddle. He had a 2x10.:(

TrojanHorse 04-23-13 07:27 PM

I'm 500 miles into my first ever trial of Chain L and the drive train is still so quiet I could ride it in church. I'm willing to take a little extra time every 1,000 miles to get it right. So far so good.

canam73 04-23-13 07:34 PM

My chain came pre-lubed so I'm good.
