CAAD 10 fork question
I noticed something on my new CAAD and since I have an "irrational fear for carbon" I wanted to ask other CAAD riders a question. Does your fork flex?
Here are the specifics. New 2012 CAAD 10 5 size 59. Vuelta Corsa HD wheels I've ridden (aprox 2000 miles is all) brakes set 1.5mm from rim. I currently weigh 240lbs.
Bike is almost new (218 miles) so I'm still getting use to it, but no headwind yesterday on the way home and I turned into our main street (right hand) not pedaling and going about 20ish mph and I could hear the breaks rubbing on the rim. Never had this problem with these same wheels on my other bike so I stopped and checked the wheel. Spokes tight, wheel true, no play in bearings and skewer tight. I went up the hill and came down and was able to duplicate again. Went home and put the wheel on my Klein, adjusted the breaks and took the same turn without rub. Adjusted the brakes to aprox .5mm from rim, up the hill again and still no noise on the turn. This eliminates the wheel as flexing IMO. I did not swap out rear wheels as that would mean a cassette swap and you can hear it's the front. Put the wheel back on the CAAD and did it one more time and same rubbing noise.
Now I could not find a similar LH turn last night as they all cross traffic and I need to find one traffic free. I want to see if it flexes the same the other direction.
So my question is, again for CAAD riders, is this normal "flex" or should I be worried? The CAAD fork is about three times larger than the Klein (carbon blades only) so I didn't expect this. If it's normal and I can "live" with it, then no problem.
Thanks

I've not experienced front-end fork flex on mine (2011 CAAD10 3 - 58cm) and I'm a robust-sized bloke! I did have wheel flex on past wheelsets that caused rim / brake shoe rub, but have now gone to stiffer wheels and all is good.

I'm you size, less 9 lbs, and my 2012 10 4 fork hasn't flexed yet. My wheelset is Fulcrum Racing7 (stock,) brakes are set to correct pad spacing and I set the torque on the headset myself when I took out some of the spacers and I keep the spokes checked. Is your headset tightened properly? The headset being loose and wheel flex are the only thing I can think of short of a cracked fork or steering tube. Hope you can figure this one out.

Forks don't bend. Did you adjust the front brake on your CAAD so that it's centered on the wheel? Also maybe you have more clearance with you brake calipers on the Klein?

Forks are designed with a certain amount of give in most cases. I am thinking the OP is probably leaning more on his front -end with the CAAD than the Klein (i.e. weight distribution ever so slightly different). Just a hunch, no scientific certainty.

shoot that's what I was afraid of . Wheels true and both bikes have the same seat to bar distance an seat to bar drop . Obviously there are geometry differences .
Both brakes are set 1 .5mm from the wheel . No idea if headset is to spec but with brake locked it does not clunk rocking back and forth .
wish I could trust the lbs but things have been coming loose since I got it they didn't even have the fd set right as it threw the chain off the big ring on the second ride . only Cannonade shop in town .
I'll inspect the fork closer tomorrow and try a different skewer .
Thanks all .

One other point - noises on a bike can frequently seem to come from one place but really come from somewhere else. Amy chance you still have the spoke protector on your rear wheel? Those can make a noise very similar to a brake rubbing on a rim. I still can't believe it's your fork. I'd wager the wheel is flexing way before the fork, but rear wheels flex more than font wheels.

LBS says it's normal and suggests leaving more space between the pads and rim. I guess I'm safe. It is amazing how easy the blades move together and apart without the wheel in there to hold them in place.

Did you check the spoke protector though?

Do people still run those things? No protector here and two tech's verified it's the front wheel hitting the pads. Just a bit more flex than I'm use to. I may try backing off the brakes a bit and see if I like it. As long as it's not going to assplode I'm fine with a bit of noise.
