Will carbon bikes last as long as steel?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's still plenty of material for that.

I'm sure the carbon fiber will last a long time. It's the resin that binds the fibers together that may place an upper limit on longevity.

Good job! That is the kind of is it heartfelt/is it demagoguery we haven't seen enough of in this thread. That oughta power us thru another page or two!

I'm in the market for a good CF mirror. The one I have now whistles so loud I can't hear my iPod while riding on the sidewalk. And before anyone asks, I DID use the search function.

Looks like some of you forget the fabulous reynolds 931 https://reynoldstechnology.biz/our_materials_931.php, but also the reynolds 953 https://reynoldstechnology.biz/our_materials_953.php , and columbus xcr https://www.columbustubi.com/eng/4_4_1.htm which are both mar aging steels, which are both stainless steels with execptional caracteristics which surpass titanium and carbon in terms of fatigue and durability. A good framebuilder can make you a top notch steel frame with fantastic comfort, lightness and durability.

Purchased in 1976 and still going strong, by far my favorite bike. I have a newer Merlin, 2004, but I still prefer this Italian steel bike.

I laaaaaaaugh whenever the "steel is real" crowd get really cracking. Where's the spot on a bike that you would least want a catastrophic failure? The fork... and that's usually made of CF. It's comedy.
Hmmm, all 5 of my steel bikes have steel forks. Weird.

How much do you get paid every time you post those links in a thread?

I don't get paid, I own two road bikes made of Reynolds tubing (one is made of 708 classic and is from 1995 the other is made of 753 and is from 1991) which have proven their qualities through time. And the qualities of newer Reynolds tubes can't be denied.
