So What's the Best Garmin Mount??

Got a new Garmin 810 on the way and I need a mount. What your favorite? I want one of the mounts that extends out in front of the bars.

K Edge.

FLvector 05-12-13 06:24 PM

Take a look at a few recent threads. I think the K-Edge would work well, since it has the option to move further away from the bar if needed.

K-Edge - it is is secure, well built and looks good.

I recently saw a thread on our local forums where a Garmin out-front mount had failed and the bloke's Edge 510 is now a bit flater after running underneath a car.

cheers

I see where Sram makes one too. Is that any good :

StanSeven 05-12-13 07:41 PM

They all are so close they aren't worth comparing. It's a piece of plastic or aluminum that holds the Garmin exactly the same way because the proprietary mount Garmin uses. They cost around $40 so the prices are about the same as well unless you want a Chinese clone. I would just get whatever your LBS has

gc3 05-12-13 07:44 PM

pretty sure the best is still the very same one discussed in the last thread on this subject. my suggestion is to buy at least two different mounts, that way you can compare for yourself.

in any case, the barfly 2.0 looks to be the winner, but aren't available yet. but then someone else will improve upon it.

K-edge

Muffin Man 05-12-13 08:05 PM

The sram mount is only like $20

bianchi10 05-12-13 08:23 PM

I'll still say the fliploc mount is great. Doesn't seem to get much love around here, but it is wicked light and super secure. Some people dont like the texture of it, but it doesn't bother me. I love it.

I just put a SRAM version on my bike and it works great... why didn't I do that a year ago!

Anyway, some of the mounts seem to mount "under" the bar (I think the k-edge does) and some mount "over" the bar like the SRAM. I decided for $20 I'd get the SRAM and try it out but some mounts do put the garmin lower and more in line with the bar. if you care, then check for that.

The garmin 510 seems to come with the garmin outfront mount - doesn't the 810? Maybe you don't need to buy one.

I have a k-edge and a barfly. Both work great.

The K-edge puts my garmin 500 level or slightly below the top of my stem. The Barfly has the garmin sitting above the stem. I dont have a preference either way.

So everybody likes the one(s) they bought the best.

Ranger, you can not get this wrong, so just pick the that you like the looks of the best.

I have been using the SRAM version of an "out front" mount. Its awesome. No complaints.

vesteroid 05-13-13 05:53 AM

i picked up a barfly on sale, it works fine for me...really like someone said just some plastic that holds your gps....not much magic here.

gc3 05-13-13 06:24 AM

unless you're needing the weight-weeniest version, which would be from racewaredirect...mine is under 15 grams but honestly that isn't the point with these things...

pallen 05-13-13 06:50 AM

I use the FSA two armed mount. Very solid and works with my 705, or any computer for that matter. Be careful though. Its 3-4g heavier than some of the others and might cost you .00001W in a 40mph headwind due to its bulkier profile.

This is before I installed the Campy shifters with the under tape cable routing.

The only mount I found that was aesthetically pleasing to me was the ControlTech Taxxi mount since it attaches directly to the stem front plate and it sits squarely in the middle as opposed to having something coming out of one side of the stem.

I mounted this on the lower position and my Garmin sits flush with the top of the stem...

Yes. I have the SRAM as well as the K-Edge. Not that big of a difference except the K-Edge is lower so the head unit will be flush in height with the handlebar whereas the SRAM will mount the head unit higher.

I'm probably missing something, but what's wrong with the mount that comes with the device?

Easier to read, don't have to look down as far.

1+ to the K- edge and Barfly both work great I use the Garmin edge 500 and the Garmin 910Xt and both sit securely on both mounts. I would go with the K-edge if you're big into looks, the paint finish is very nice.

Nothing, but the "out front" mounts squirt pheromones as you pedal...
