Snapped FSA SLK Crank....

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Snapped FSA SLK Crank....

I have just seen first hand today a FSA SLK non drive side crank snap while riding. We were going up hill at a very moderate effort, and it snapped, bringing the rider crashing down into a ditch. While I have ridden carbon cranks for a while, this makes me nervous. There was no sign of a failure, or damage, just a catastrophic failure. It was probably about 4-5 years old, and was a 50/36. Has this been common with FSA? How about other carbon crank manufactures? Campy, etc?? Any way of telling BEFORE it fails? Any hope that FSA will replace? Thanks-

Pics ? I hate to hear about that since I have one. If it was bought new it will be replaced as long as it's still under warranty. I've broken 2 sram red ones (old red, not old old red but black red) both were replaced.

Im not sure how many watts its been up to, but I'd imagine alot. He is a bigger guy, and regularly sprints to the low to mid 40's MPH.

How did the Red Cranks fail when they did? Did you crash as a result?

I think I remember seeing a thread recently on ****** about someone's FSA crank beginning to crack/separate right at the crank arm / crank shaft junction and that apparently this is not uncommon but it is something that you just need to be wary of and need to look for since it sounds like the problem occurs during the first few months of use and that FSA will honor the warranty very quickly.

Been there, done that. But mine was a Shimano Dura Ace 7800. I mean that's more unusual than seeing a Prius on a flatbed truck.

Be glad it didn't fail during an all-out sprint.

I hope your friend is going to be okay.

From time to time, parts fail. I haven't seen many fail like that, but it happens.

never snapped a crank arm but I did have the pedal thread insert pull out of the drive side of my chorus crank while riding. I stayed upright but just barely.

I stand corrected, sprints TO 40 MPH. The crank failed right where the pedal goes in. Not sure if there was a carbon, or aluminum insert for the pedal threads, but it failed right where this ended.

Really? You would think someone who is on the Grand Tour would be riding some higher end stuff.
