Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Ride - Romin Comp

this morning I got my first 'other than around the block' ride on a Romin Comp 143 saddle. a coworker let me borrow it this past weekend but rain kept me off of it. so, first off, this is the 3rd saddle I've had on this bike (oem was a Fizik Pave', 2nd was a Terry Liberator Y Gel), the fizik was actually a decent saddle, but I got a lot of numb nuts on it, my coworker gave me the liberator and it was an improvement in some ways and a downgrade in others. long story short, the terry was simply to soft. next thing I noticed about the saddle was the weight, holy cow is the romin a TON lighter than the Terry (almost 250g lighter). then on my ride I really liked that the seat material was not very tacky and allowed great movement around without my shorts sticking/dragging on the surface. the Terry has a fairly tacky surface. I also liked the oh so slight kick up at the rear, the slightly deeper cutout and narrower nose. this is a great improvement even on my first ride with it, even though it has only been about 10mi. sit bones were no more or less sore but the ride is more enjoyable with this less intrusive saddle. it almost disappears beneath me, I hope it gets even better.

I got a Romin Pro recently, after numbness on a long ride (122 miles) towards the end. It's hard and thin, and crazy light. The wider nose (the Pro is wider than the comp) is great, but it makes it very sensitive to perfect alignment.

Wonderful saddle, well worth the (considerable) investment.

Just remember that because of the shape of the romin, it can take some adjusting. What feels good now for 10 miles, may not for 30. I have made SEVERAL adjustments on my Romin evo to find my sweet spot on it. Been through 13 saddles and the evo has been the best bar none, but even with this one, it took some miles and adjusting to get it the way I wanted it.

what is the difference in the Romin Pro, Romin Comp, and Romin Evo, Romin Evo Pro, and Romin Expert? I like the black and white Evo Pro, and it's expensive, but how is it different???

Comp is the heaviest, then Expert, then Pro. The Evo adds a tiny bit of padding and a tiny bit of weight. I went with the Evo Expert, it's awesome.

I have no doubts that this will be the case. I'm reserving final judgement until I've got a couple hundy miles on it, just noticing that the initial impression is a very positive change from the previous saddle(s). and I can't beat the price ($0), coworker also just gave me a Garmin Premium heart rate strap to go with my gps, dude has been beyond cool

difference between the comp and pro is the rails. Pro weighs a few grams less. I don't know difference between the evo and regular romin.
I had one. It made me numb after 15 miles or so. Even after trying different adjustments.

I remember that feeling on my first ride with mine, and I didn't even have it set up right. You have a good friend

The romin evo takes a bit to get it set up, but I feel it's worth it.
I think a good saddle is the one you don't notice. For me the romin evo is just that. It took about 40 miles to get it dialed in and to break my sitbones and soft tissue in for it but now it's just perfect. The nose isn't too thin for "rivet riding" bug the one thing that bothers me a bit is that it's really short so there isn't much room to slide back for hills.

I don't think the shortness is keeping you from sliding back, it's that lip on the back.

The evo line is slightly more padded, as mentioned above, and the comp/expert/pro designations basically tell you what the rail material is. The carbon rails are ovalized, btw, so you need a compatible seat clamp on your post (one that clamps top and bottom should work fine, side clamps probably will not.)

I've really enjoyed mine for hte last year (romin Evo expert) and for rides < 50 miles it's fantastic but I'm currently looking for something that won't leave me hating my saddle at the 80+ mile mark. I may try tweaking the angle and see what that does for me. I really don't think I could do a double on it.

Keep in mind that tilt is very important on a saddle like this. My saddle clamp slipped once, and after 40 mile ride, it felt like someone had been hitting my taint repeatedly with a crowbar.

Tilt is important on every saddle.

my saddle clamp slipped when i hit a bump on the way in this morn, enough that I noticed IMMEDIATELY. stopped, repositioned it, tightened it up and off within a couple mins.

Comp has steel rails, Expert Ti and Pro carbon. The Evo's shape is quite a bit different. Broader nose and flatter in the rear, more like the Toupe or Phenom.
