Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What will I get for $5,000. bucks????

Got an excellent gift: $5,000 bucks. The only stipulation is that it has to be a completed unit: I can't build up a bike, piece by piece. What is the best I can get for the money? The last date to purchase my bike is July 20, 2005. (Incidentally, I ride a Cannondale Cyclocross now, set up for road riding.) All suggestions welcomed.

Thanx,

Urbanmonk

Well, you could have about ten of my "vintage" road bikes. Ready to ride. Let me know.

$5000 right? So you can get a good $1000 bike and $4000 worth of bibs and jerseys.

I just need to have it picked out by the time she is down from Phoenix around the middle of July.

Meh. While thats all well and good you might as well buy a mid-range bike and spend the rest on clothes, fitting, etc, etc. Are you racing yet? If not - I really don't think it matters - unless you absolutely MUST have a really expensive bike. If i had that much $ I'd build one up and I'd like it a lot better than an off the shelf bike. Why not build it?

just build it up, talk to your LBS most of them can order all the parts and build it up with the parts you want and since you have to have one bill, you'll get it. I see that as an over all winner

This is what I would do. Start going to your LBS's to see what custom bikes you can get from them.

If your aunt's disgustingly rich, I'd order a custom titus or seven and say, "oh oops... it's slightly over $5000.. silly me" and i'm sure she's generous enough to cover it.

You might wanna check out vanilla bikes, they're amazingly beautiful.

Tack on some custom lugs too.

Hi,
I'll tell you the same thing I tell the guy buying a $500 bike.
There is no best, there is the bike you like. Go try some bikes.
A bunch of companies have bikes this expensive. Serotta, Litespeed, Merlin, Fondriest. You could also look into a one of a kind paint job.
But each has it's own personality. Until you try it, there isn't a way to know if you like it even as much as a bike costing half as much.

8.3 Trek 1000s, start your own budget race team/bike gang with your friends...
In all seriousness, that is a tough one. It has a lot to do with your dimensions as well as the type of riding your looking to do...

I think you can get the Scott CR1 Pro with Dura Ace (or Campa Record) and some trick wheels for around $5000. Without going custom, that would be my choice.

You can get a lot but don't walk into a bike shop and say oh yeah got 5k to spend what can I get.. You will get a good bike but not a good deal..

You are the dream customer for most bike shops, but make them earn the 5k. In the end you have to be happy.. Get a good Titanium bike with Record or Dura-Ace and you will be set for a long time.. Also look into getting a 2nd set of wheels.. Training and racing set..
