But does it really matter? If it's too hard, shift down. If too easy, shift up. If you're out of gears, you know you're already doing the best you can.

Looking at the cassette is what I do, though it does not feel that safe since I for some reason wobble a tad on the left as I do so...

But the rest is probably the smartest approach ;)

Nice bike. Worry less, ride more. Ride at a cadence that feels comfortable, change gear when you feel you need to. That's about it.
