2013 - Animals You Have Encountered On Your Rides

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today I saw whales. Probably 3-5 of them feeding a bit offshore. One was spyhopping. I've seen tons of whales (literally, ha ha), and I think these were humpbacks rather than the usual California Greys.

I did find this amusing. Sadly, I didn't find the actual peacock.

About a month ago, I saw a young mink run along the road I was on. It crossed the road after I went by and headed down the bank of the river. I've been in this area for 9 years and that was a first.

I've seen deer, rattlesnakes, gophers, eagles, turkeys and ospreys, too.

I see these all the time. I must be getting better at hitting them. I ran over my second one this past weekend and somehow only managed to drop a chain. The first one put me in the E.R.

I almost ran into this guy on a descent recently. Although I think it was really a dude dressed as this guy, and his buddy dressed as a normal person.

nothing like running into an endangered poisonous Timber Rattle Snake! It was baking in the sun in the middle of a gravel road and caught my attention as I was descending.

Squirrels; groundhogs; birds every so often; snakes (rattlers and copperheads sunning on the road); dogs; cats; and that is all on my bike.

When I use to ride motorcycles...................bears; elk < these will wake you up quickly I assure you!; fox; coyotes; dogs; cats; Bigfoot < just kidding, wanting to see who is paying attention.

Our mtn bike ride was cut short last saturday by a (presumably, it was around 11:30 in the morning) rabid raccoon. Almost to the top of a steep rocky climb he's standing there in the middle of the path on his hind legs growling at me. Thankfully he backed away and got tangled up in some vines before being freaked enough to split. Not sure what I would have done if he came at me.

It's not a "wild" animal, but I think it still counts. My current favorite ride is an out-and-back to a horse stable situated at the end of an island. The stables area has nice bathrooms, shade, and water fountains so it's become a popular rest stop for cyclists. Anyway, there's a horse there--a pony named "Joey"--who's gotten used to the cyclists' attention and treats (he especially likes Clif bars). Now when I ride up, Joey trots over immediately, and if I don't offer him something, he starts kicking the fence with his front hoof! I've become mighty fond of that stupid horse.
