I can not decide which tires to buy. I am 180lbs and do not race. That being said I ride with a pretty competitive group. We enjoy pushing each other. Tire choices
Rubino Pro - $53
Rubino Pro Slick $56
GP4000s - $92

Looking for fast reliable tires. Any help would be appreciated. I just can not make up my mind.

There is a pair of NIB Hutchinson Atom Comps over in the For Sale forum for $65 shipped, which is a killer price for a great tire. No affiliation or knowledge of the seller, I just noticed the ad and was tempted to buy myself, though I don't need tires right now.

Call me cheap, but I think anybody who'd pay $92 for a bicycle tire should be locked up for his own protection. The Pirellis on my car didn't cost that much, and that's 26 pounds of rubber, steel and exotic eternal fabric that will go 40,000 miles carrying 3200 pounds.

You must have looked hard to find GP4000's for $92. Most places sell them for $60. or less.

• It is unlikely that most riders will ever come close to pushing the traction limits on modern tires.
• It is unlikely that most riders will put enough miles on enough different brands of tires for their recommendations to be truly meaningful.
• The "standard" tire recommendation here is a GP4000. I've never tried it because in my limited experience with Conti's (which was about 20 years ago now), I found them to be flat magnets.
• For what it's worth, I roll on Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp tires.

Er? I'm but a lowly cat 4 packfill wannabe, and I've worn out many, many tires and pushed the traction limit on all of them. Sometimes to my own detriment...

I second the recommendation for the Contis. I don't really like them, but I like them better than the Rubinos.

The best price I can find with 25 mm in stock for the GP4000S is $39 tire with $13 shipping from wiggle. If you have any other suggestions on better places to buy let me know. Cheapest I have found for 23mm is $37/tire.

Hi,

Do something different and go 28mm on your road tyres (if they fit your bike).

At the right pressures most mere mortals will be faster than 23mm or 25mm,
due to then being more comfortable and less tiring, the same reason they
don't feel as fast as skinny tyres, but in reality they are faster for most.

A couple of my friends are GP4000S users and they are now trying the new Bontrager AW3 Hard Case and Hard Case Lite. I can't remember which of these, but one of them said it's comparable to the Contis.

I just put 23 Rubino Pro Slicks on my bike. Replaced some old dry rotted Rubino slicks. I gotta say the Pro's are real nice. I got them at Performance for 29$ each. They are the older 120TPI version. The Pro 3 has 150TPI. I think they ride pretty smooth. I haven't pushed them too hard yet. But they seem to have good grip.

For the money, hard to beat.

I bought the Continental GP4000S, used a coupon and bought cleats to get free shipping. $71 for the pair of tires. Cleats were $24 and I needed them anyway.

I use Rubino Pros in 25mm as my training tire and find it very reliable and last a long time. GP4000 23mm do ride nicer and handle better I can't talk for durability haven't worn through a set yet only 1900 km on the current set.
