Should a high quality very costly bike be based upon ability? Not cash in hand?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

From top to bottom, this may be the dumbest retread of a thread I've read. Now I have to figure out why I waded through this cesspool. There isn't one redeeming post.

Hey now, I tried to pull us into an average speed argument - that has to be worth something, right?

I'm taking my expensive bike that I don't deserve, wearing my overpriced Assos/Rapha/Capo clothing that makes me look fat, and the fancy bifocal sunglasses that confirm my Fred Poseur identity, and ride on the local MUP without helmet or gloves....by myself...and I'm not going to wave...eff y'all...

We could have avoided this discussion altogether if there were more stringent requirements for ownership of a toilet and a Road Bike Action subscription.

Is there a possibility to link GPS data and LBS receipts to this forum ...
and have a system where only people with a certain average speed and a certain minimum bike price ...
can post?
That would be good

As long as you know that you don't deserve it and have a frown on your face expressing that while riding it ... it's okay.

This could be a new angle for Strava. Instead of a suffer score you can earn points towards a bike upgrade.

Can you imagine the cheating if there were actual material rewards for Strava? It truly would be the Stravapocalypse.

Fred and poseur are incompatible. You can be one or the other, but not both.

I have the opposite problem. My bike doesn't deserve someone as handsome, charming and atheletic like me. Without me, it's average speed would still be zero. But it does appreciate that I gave it an average speed of 16 mph.

I just like to gloat when the wrenches at the LBS where I take my bike for cleaning and topping off my tires with air are all jealous because they can't afford to get one of their own...

This rather dissapointing that this thread is petering out at 6 pages, back in the day, it was good for at least 12, and way more flaming.

I'm a noob and just bought my first carbon road bike (got my last road bike new in 1987). I bought slightly more than I could afford -- got a great deal from my LBS and they're letting me pay the balance over time - no interest.* I wanted a bike that was light and comfortable and that fit and had good components that I could rely on as I got better. I've improved a lot and made small changes to the bike along the way for fit and comfort and the more I ride, the more I understand the bike and how to ride it. No regrets so far.

Also I really like matching kits. It's important because when you pass me as I slowly plod along, I want all the details just right. That way you can laugh with your cycling buddies later when you tell the story of that girl in her matching Francaise Des Jeux on her expensive carbon that you left in your dust.

*benefit of living in a small town.

If the OP had started this on Monday instead of Friday then we might get the result you wanted. But there is nothing to stop you from start one of your own next week.

Last weekend there were lots of $5,000+ bikes on the MUP. Once the MUP (it's a rail to trail) got away from real congestion, I saw many $10K bikes.
