Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No idea. I prefer to ride solo. Partly to get away from idle chit chat.

Around here we have long boarders who ride all across the lane for miles down hill. Talk about p/o'ing the drivers!
As for me, I'm on the common sense and courtesy side. I expect slow farm traffic, long boarders, pedestrians and bikers to be reasonable about their co-use of the road with cars, semis and others. That means not unduly obstructing faster traffic and allowing faster traffic to pass if it is safe to do so.

Those two-abreast chit-chatters should keep it on the MUP, along with the comfort-bike-riding soccer moms, unleashed dogs and children, ear-bud-wearing joggers, well-armed muggers, bat-wielding psychopaths, and over various hyphenated freaks that the MUP was designed for!

From the cyclists viewpoint...

Some local roads are two lanes in each direction. A row of cyclists riding courteously single file in the right lane makes drivers feel like they are capable of squeezing by in the right lane, getting incredibly close to the cyclists. If we ride double file, we essentially take the lane, requiring cars to pass in the left lane, where they should be passing us anyways, not inches from us in the right lane.

Whoever made that prediction doesn't seem to have a very good track record. You should probably ignore them.

Drives me crazy on the bike path when oncoming riders do this and start drifting into my lane because they're looking at the other person...It's usually the beach cruiser / hybrid crowd that are the worst offenders.

I go up north: Bridgewater, Washington Depot, Kent.
But I do find decent roads from Bethel/Newtown south to Westport/Fairfield ..... I don't know your area that well .... too far south for me.

I think there's some hammerhead ride in Greenwich on Wednesdays ??
And TargetTraining has a ride somewhere.

on my commute I mostly ride single file, weekend rides are early morning on unpopulated roads, over 25mi I ~might~ see a dozen cars. if we feel like chit-chat while riding we'll ride 2 abreast. for me its all about safety, if i'm in a safe environment for chitchat i'll do it, if not I won't. really that simple.

This is true for most states (if not all of them).

If there is a lot of traffic, you are effectively not allowed to ride abreast. If the traffic is low, you are allowed a reasonable amount of time to move to riding single file to the right (you are not required to instantly get out of the way of other vehicles).

If there are two same-direction lanes, the existance of the other lane means that traffic isn't (technically/strictly) being impeded (since they have the other lane for travel). That is, you are legally allowed (generally) to take the right lane (as far as I can tell by reading the law).

Road etiquette is a give and take, and it is incumbent upon us to offer drivers the same respect we expect from them.

At the same time, in low traffic areas and times, or as mentioned in large groups, riding two abreast is perfectly reasonable.

I will add that in my state, there is no law requiring bicyclists to ride single file, but there also is no law allowing the to ride wider than single file.
Yes, but inviting a car to pass you in your lane is very risky. As I said above when I ride single file , it is virty the asame as two abreast. I take enough of the lane to discourage cars passing in my lane. If i see a car wanti g to pass me, I do pull to the right, but on my terms where the shoulder or gutter is clean and secure. It would be similar to be riding two abreast and then to change to single file when the need arises.

That is not a prediction, my friend, it is the instructuon of the law. Shall not means you aren't supposed to do it, not tha you don't think it will happen naturally.

Essackly! That is what I also believe about not allowing cars to pass in the lane without controlling the situation.

I regularly ride roads with at least two lanes each direction and every time there are drivers that choose to squeeze by in my lane rather than move to the next lane over when there are no other vehicles on the road.

I hate stupid people.

You must occupy around half the lane. I like to ride berween 40 and 60% of the lane width from the shoulder or curb.

I actively encourage drivers to pass me in the right lane by waving them through with a circular motion.

Cars passing close are not a problem. Clueless drivers are the most dangerous followed by aggressive ones. If you're plugging up the road, you inevitably provoke the loons even if you are in the right.

The people that are watching out for you are not going to hit you -- especially if you invite them to squeeze you. And you don't have to have them blow by at highway speeds either. Just drift left to slow things down and as they catch you, move right and wave them through. They get where they're going, you get where you're going, and everyone stays calm.

The issue I often encounter is that many cars refuse to pass even with the wave through. I really wish they would pass. Keeps everything running smoother.
