It's a fan's jersey. Wear the thing to show you love the sport and the event. If you care what other people think you'll never do anything fun. |

OP is from Atlanta. And we have great weather the last two days. Cartersville Century and GA400 Centuries. Last year, Cartersville was a record setting 105 for here, Garmin reporting 113 on the pavement.
This year, cool and breazy. High of 85. Got a fantastic 200mile weekend... granted today... I was pretty sluggish. My point... OP has no excuse to get out and ride. |

I wouldn't wear it. But that's just me. I'm super picky.
|
I wouldn't wear it because I dont like wearing jersey kits or pieces that are for pro teams. Every time I see someone wearing one I think to myself, "there goes a poser". I did When I first started cycling, but then again I was a poser when i first started, so it was warranted. Just because I say I wouldn't, doesn't mean you or anyone else shouldn't though. If you want to, wear it. if you feel uneasy about wearing it then dont. if you dont care, wear it. If you do care what others may possibly say or think, dont. If you want to "look like you know what you're doing", find some sporty looking castelli or LG gear that look like team gear but without the team sponsors and stuff. I care about what I look like on the bike, but others dont. I'm also that way off the bike, I care how I present myself but others dont.
It comes down to how you feel about it. If you feel that you would regret wearing it after a couple people haggled you about it then I would just frame it and hang it on the wall. Otherwise, if you really dont care, then sport it and be proud of it. |
Let's review:

I have a football jersey like my favorite NFL team. Nobody mistakes me for a football jock, nor do they seem to mind my wearing it. So what's the difference? I say wear it if you like it.
|
People wear replicas of other sports jerseys all the time and it's considered a fan tribute, but for some reason some in the cycling community get all bent out of shape when you wear replica team kit or champion jerseys as if you are somehow offending or impersonating the pros. Wear the jersey whenever you like, if someone doesn't like it, pfftht :p

Well I was just a little concerned since I dont want to be harrassed because I am wearing a jersey. That will most likely diminish the amount of fun I have on my rides if I had to deal with A-holes all the time, not so much the weird look but maybe commenting and trying stir it up. I'll wear it. I also wanted to see what was the opinion on the actual tour de france malloit since I've seen many posts of just regular yellow colored jerseys and that seemed to be sort of an issue for some. If a regular yellow jersey caused some comotion I would have thought the actual TDF one would get me crucificed... Hopefully not the case.
|
Spend more time riding and less worrying. Unless of course, you stop every cyclist on the road you meet and ask them what they think...that's just needy! :D

As for the jersey, it is CLEARLY not an ACTUAL leader's jersey so if anybody gives you lip about pretending to lead the TDF just club them with your frame pump and ride on. |

On the other hand, I have to say I'd never wear yellow (or pink for that matter). It's not so much because of the "you didn't earn it" rule, it's more that it's so blatantly and unsubtley newbie. It's the only symbol of cycling that non-cyclists get, which makes it desperately uncool among cyclists. Like Primal Wear stuff, it's just straight up Fred. Something more obscure like a Belgian National Champion jersey is much cooler. |
I would think it would be showing that you are are fan of a great sport.
I don't think that all of those guys who are wearing their pro replica Yankees, Cowboys or Maple Leafs jerseys worry that someone will mistake them for a pro member of the team. |
I pick up used jerseys on eBay with obscure amateur team names on them. Just as good but much cheaper than new pro-name clone jerseys.

There definitely is an ethos in cycling, shared by many that you don't wear team or replica jerseys. That comes from the rules applicable to racing. You can't race in a jersey of a team you do not ride for, or with advertising on the jersey, other than your sponsors. You also can't wear a jersey that you didn't win the right to wear. (i.e. to wear the Rainbow jersey in a road race, you have to be the current World Road race champion) A lot of cyclists who race, or have raced, develop an attitude that they won't wear team jerseys other than their own, and won't wear "awards" jerseys. That attitude then filters out somewhat to other cyclists. Thus the culture regarding wearing jerseys as fans, tends to be different in cycling than in other sports such as football. So, I won't wear a jersey that has any sponsorship on it, other than my sponsors. Just my personal take. You can wear what you want to wear. |
I guess I would have to get a jersey with my name on it since I am the only one that sponsors me... I'll stick to the yellow jersey, ill feel like a champ blasting at 15mph for miles and miles...
|
If the general attitude is that one doesn't wear a team jersey unless you are on it then why do they make and sell them? And who buys them? Just curious.

Scribble a few unreadable "autographs" on it with black magic marker and tell everyone you are the world's worst bus driver.

The people that don't give a rat's ass about other cyclist's opinions. I have yet to meet a real life dooshbag cyclist who acts like his internet dooshbag cyclist persona. Thinking it is one thing, but actually making a remark about what one wears in a social setting will have real life repercussions.
A couple of years ago there were a lot of BMC jersey with rainbow stripes. Nobody ever got the Cadel reference. |
Your father was kind enough to get you a souvenir. It's kind and considerate.
My father left my mother destitute. No sad farewells, no jersey, no nothing. There are worst things. You can always send your jersey to a Third World Nation. :) |
If you don't finish first, you're just another barney in that thing.
|
I climb faster than a lady who wears a polka dot jersey all the time. No big deal, I say. Wear whatever floats your boat until someone gives you some money for wearing what they want you to wear.
