Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Focus is a cool little car - good cargo room, pretty good handling and (subjectively) nice styling. The only thing that bugs me about it is one of those things that can not be unseen - on the US model, it's given the appearance of a great big air intake for the radiator... but about 75% of that surface area is just black molded plastic.

And? I was agreeing that Helicopter Parents were a recent phenomena and that it wasn't the way kids were raised when I grew up. I, too, simply had to be home by a certain time (usually when the street lights came on) so, by that criteria, *SHOCKER* we have a shared experience growing up. Just because your old days occurred before my old days, doesn't mean that my old days weren't old days, given the criteria.

Agreed, this is a pretty big deal for my wife and I - families that eat together usually have a stronger relationships, and we make a point to sit down at a table together for dinner.

Wait, the Cantina Band 45 (Meco) or the narrated LP? Had both and thought I might be the only one.

You know, the flip side to this argument of yours is the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.

However, on the child-rearing, laws won't even allow laissez faire parenting. If you set your kids out to play in the neighborhood and be back for dinner, get ready for a chat with CPS. Nevermind how my sister and I used to lie down and sleep in the back seat of the car on road trips. Again, try that these days.

Impreza is nice in the snow belt.

I think that, even given the HUGE age differences in this thread (I mean, Billy's so old his blood type is dust), our childhood experiences have more in common with each other than with any of the kids growing up today; that's not nostalgia - that's computers and the dawn of the information age.

Side note, re: sleeping on road trips - ha ha, when I took road trips with my uncle, I would sometimes sleep in a little nook above the front seats (big van) - that really wouldn't fly today.
